San Diego State University Admission Requirements

I applied to SDSU and applicants are required to receive grades of C- or better to complete a-g requirements. I am currently taking AP Calculus AB and I am struggling. I earned a D+ for first semester. Does this ruin my chances of admission? By the way this is my very first D and my weighted GPA is a 4.1. My SAT, ACT, and AP test scores are pretty decent also.

SDSU’s provisonal admission states you need a C or higher in all your Senior classes ( not just a-g courses) to maintain your acceptance. I suggest you contact admissions and ask them what are your options. For the CSU’s, if you get a D 1st semester but pass with a C or higher 2nd semester, you validate the D grade. Most CSU’s are willing to work with you and wait until your final grade to make a decision if your acceptance will be rescinded. I would still talk to admissions and see what you can do to remedy the situation. Better to be proactive now and then later when you may not have a choice.

Also look at getting a tutor and/or extra help from your teacher to get the grade to a C by year’s end.

From SDSU’s website::::
Keep Your Grades Up!
Admission is based on self-reported information from your CSUMentor application. Once you are provisionally admitted, we will verify this information against your official transcript. Please make sure to report accurate information.

Your admission may be rescinded for reasons such as the following:
your GPA, test scores or course grades are lower than what you reported on the application.
you miss any admission deadlines.
you earn D or F grades in any coursework (not just a–g courses) taken during your senior year.
you misreported or did not complete a required course.

If you are taking this class to fulfill the a-g classes, it isn’t an extra class past the requirements, then things are pretty bad here. You need to satisfy the a-g requirements to be even eligible for admission to CSU schools.

If this class is part of your a-g, there is still perhaps an out as @Gumbymom mentioned. There is a process called validation; see http://www.calstate.edu/counselors/preparing/ I would keep all your options open, including perhaps staying in HS an extra year so you meet the math requirement. Otherwise your option will be to attend a CC and then transfer. Rather than going this alone you should be working with your GC and perhaps also contact SDSU admissions.

Even if not part of a-g, there is still a risk of being rescinded. Your GC should have experience with what has happened to similar students and be able to advise you.

There is a silver lining here, although perhaps it may be difficult to see when you are worried and stressed. You are discovering that there is something wrong with how you study. It could be not spending enough time, or not doing the right things when you study, or both.

In a college math/science class many students spend 5-10 hours per week on each class. Many HS students, often in fact the better students, have never learned to study effectively and just get by on native smarts. After they go over the material a few times it seems familiar and they think they “know” it, confusing recognition with recall. Usually they remember enough for the test and their verbal skills let them pad out essays, but on math tests they find out they can’t recall enough to solve many problems. In college this cursory study approach won’t work even in subjects where it was enough back in HS, since the expectations will be higher and the questions on tests more challenging. It is not unusual for solid HS students to find themselves with mostly C’s or even on probation after their 1st college semester.

Your grade here is giving you notice & time to develop better study skills before college when it is for keeps, if only you take advantage of it. Let me recommend the book “Make it Stick” that discusses what research has shown about learning, along with plenty of explicit suggestions for HS and college students.
