Hello:
I thought I had a fair chance in one of the SJSU, SFState, San Diego State for Computer Science. But, I got a D in AP Calc in this 7th semester. How does it affect my chances? I am a regular decision candidate. Any help is appreciated? Is there anything that I can do now to improve the chances? thank you thank you in advance.
Most CSU’s provisional admission contracts state you need to get a C or higher in all your a-g courses and maintain your current GPA. D’s or F’s Senior year could result in your admission being rescinded. What you need to do is contact admissions for all the CSU’s you have applied and let them know about the D in AP Calc. Most schools are willing to work with you, so they may only require you pass 2nd semester with a C and you will be fine. Be proactive now and give these schools a heads up. If you are accepted into SDSU and enroll, they expect a 7th semester transcript so it is better that they are aware of the problem grade now. Do not let this go and wait until after graduation where you may not have any alternatives.
Good Luck.
The CSU’s have tons of applicants, so they can choose to rescind anyone who doesn’t meet the requirements.
You really need to contact you schools and see if they are willing to work with you. A “D” in high school AP calc, for a CS major, does not bode well.
Thank you both. From SJSU Website, I see that I need to make up for this D by the Spring of 2016. I am enrolling into one of the community colleges and see if I can better my grade. Dropping the course from the transcript is not an option. I have not got acceptance from any of the colleges yet, should I still call them? If I call them, what should I tell?
Thanks.
@Gumbymom - I heard that ‘D’ in an AP course is considered a C by UCs and CSUs! Do you think I am still OK?
No, a D in any a-g course is a reason to be possibly rescinded. I would contact the CSU’s in question and give them a heads up on your situation. If you plan to retake the class at a CCC, then that should be satisfactory. I would get the final word from admissions at these schools instead of any CC posters since we are not admissions.
Thank you, I am retaking the course at CCC.
CalMateo, to clarify further, to earn the extra grade point in an AP course, a grade of “C” or higher has to be earned. (this explains why a “D” is not considered a “C”)
From CSU mentor website:::
A grade of D in an honors IB or Advanced Placement course does not earn extra points.
Is this situation an appeal in advance, unofficially?
Once you receive you acceptances, I would contact admissions regarding the D. Admissions may just require that you pass the 2nd semester with a C or higher. Just notify the schools as soon as possible to figure out your options so you do have somewhere to attend in the Fall. An appeal may not be necessary or may not be considered if you break the provisional admission contract. It will all depend upon each school.
