Hey, everyone!

My girlfriend is attending Santa Monica College and is in this Fall's transfer cycle. She is applying to UCLA as a Psychology major. I'll try to explain the situation, short and sweet.

She was stellar student maintaining a 3.9+ GPA all throughout her first year and a half. Then, she received a D in Physics 12 during Fall Semester '12 because her professor was told to give a departmental final instead of his own. Unfortunately, the departmental final contained material that he didn't cover. So her GPA took quite a hit, but still managed to keep it around 3.7+.

Now the question is, she'll be finished with her IGETC by Summer 2013, but she will be missing one major pre-reqs, the Physics 12 class. She is pretty stressed out about her D affecting her chances. Frankly, I'm a bit worried as well, as I understand that transferring is a different beast now. I just wanted to know if anyone was in a similar situation and had positive results? At the very worst, a deferred admission?

Any insight, encouragement, hope, soft letdown lol, anything would help.

Thanks so much,

-A caring boyfriend.

Appeal that grade ASAP. Even if it is too late, try it anyway. Talk to the president of the school, Dean, president of physics department, etc… Get that grade to at least a C! Do not take no for an answer. Keep fighting to get that grade change.

Missing a required class is quite damaging, much more than her GPA. Get it done.

Argh… I was afraid of that!

We’ve already tried appealing to the department, but they wouldn’t budge. We wrote an addendum on the application explaining that she will retake the course as soon as she can, even if she were accepted.

It’s not exactly a required class. She will have finished her IGETC and it’s one of the pre-major classes. But when I transferred (albeit years and years ago), it wasn’t so damning to not have one of your pre-major classes. I was able to just take one of my classes after transferring.

Anyway, thank you so much for your thoughts.

She will finish IGETC by summer? I don’t even think that’s allowed for UCLA. I’m pretty sure that has to be finished by the end of the spring semester prior to leaving CC.

Too be honest, there’s not much else to say. Not to be mean, but odds are she will get denied if she’s missing a major prerequisite for a really competitive major.

The web page at UCLA admissions says “To be considered for this major, all of the preparatory courses listed here must be completed by the spring before transfer.” Your GF should read that page.

It behooves her to follow all instructions on that page carefully, because it goes on to say “You must be admitted directly into this major; you will not be able to change to this major after admission to UCLA.”

If she doesn’t have web access, she should make an appointment with the xfer counselors at SMCC. As one of the largest sources of xfer students to UCLA, they should be familiar with the rules and procedures. In fact she should be working with a xfer counselor anyway, to make sure she has done all that is needed to be a successful applicant.

Oh my gosh. Thank you so much everyone!
