Santa Monica (SMC) Scholars Program

Hi, I am going into SMC next year and my gpa is too low to join the scholars program at SMC. I was wondering if you can still join it as a continuing student in SMC since I cannot join it after high school, although my grades have improved considerably.

You can apply for the scholars program if you have gpa of 3.0 or better in SMC. So yes you can still apply, but you have to finish certain number of units before you can apply, not sure about the number but it might somewhere around 15 units.

Thanks:)

Welcome to SMC! Here is the page that describes the entry requirements. I joined as a continuing student, and it was not that big of a deal.

The important question though, is how much does it help your transfer chances if you were enrolled in the scholars program? I think the only difference it makes is you would see the word “scholar” or something in your transcript, I’m not sure if that would mean much to admissions

I’m not saying its worthless but how much does it matter really beside having more exclusive classes you can choose from?

I can list you the benefits that I have: TAP Certification (priority review at UCLA & Irvine for all L&S majors except Communications), smaller classes (about 25), GREAT teachers, priority registration, and really determined/passionate classmates. Really the only downside is a bit more writing, but in college I feel that it is expected, not a burden.

So far the classes that I love are Scholars classes. Harren is correct, you don’t get a GPA bump, but it does say ‘schol’ on your transcript.
