I'm currently a Junior in High School and am strongly considering going to SMC and then transferring to hopefully UCLA after two years. I plan to join the Scholars Program (TAP) so I can get some (even a little) priority over other students who also plan on transferring.

I understand that to be able to be accepted into the Scholars Program that you need to have maintained a 3.0 GPA in High School and have completed an English 1 course or a 3 or higher on the AP English exam. My question is does the 3.0 GPA requirement count from only 10th/11th grade year like UC schools or is it the High School GPA as a whole as in 9-12th grade? Thanks in advance.

Im currently in the scholars program, and as far as I can remember the 3.0 is the overall, and they dont need your ap english score, there are people who havent even taken AP's but their in the program. You need to take the placement test and see what english level your in......which needs to be english 101.

So as in the overall GPA do you mean 9th, 10th, 11th, and then the 12th grade GPA up till when you turn in your application? Also is there a placement test for math? And does it determine at all whether you get into the scholars program or not?

i have been thinking about taking a course during the summer next year at CC

right now i would find it very difficult to fit in time for a night CC class or even online as i'm very committed to my two AP classes right now but so far i seem to be doing OK in those.

any other advice? and i will assume now that the GPA for the scholars program is indeed for the entire 9th-12th grade GPA as a whole? i'm very motivated to do whatever i can do to get into berkeley or UCLA

yeah i checked out that site. i even sent in an email asking my GPA question but it seemed as though the person who replied back didn't really understand it...

also what are your guys' take on community service hours? can i do it while in high school and use it towards my transfer application? how many hours would you guys recommend? any ec or other things i should know about that can give me a better chance at transferring?
