SAP Appeal Approved, Financial Aid Award given, then revoked the following day

Hi!

I’m currently a Comp Sci junior undergraduate at Loyola Marymount University. I let my grades slip pretty badly & because of that, I am on Academic probation. As a commuter (which is about a two hour drive from my house to school almost everyday), it was hard to keep up with the full time schedule and maintaing a good standing.

This past fall, I decided to drop down to being a part time student rather than a full time student & discussed this with the dean. We filled out a SAP appeal stating that “the two classes I would take, I MUST get at least a C- in both classes”.

Grades came out, I met the requirements as stated by the dean “B in Databases, C- in Proofs”. I got an email saying that a financial aid award was given to me.

My issue is however, I accepted the award offer, and then the following day, I get an email saying “an important message has been left on your financial aid account”. I check it, and all of a sudden, my aid and everything was revoked, which confuses me a lot considering I met the requirements as stated by the dean & approved by the financial aid office on the appeal, but then they revoke my aid immediately after I accepted it.

My question is, are they allowed to do that? or under what circumstances can they approve me for aid & then immediately revoke it the following day? I couldn’t call them since the day that revoke was issued was a weekend. Since now that the aid is revoked, I’m being charged for the previous semester & all my classes have been dropped for the Spring 2018 semester.

Is it possible that your grades weren’t high enough to bring your GPA up to the college’s minimum? Maybe the aid was revoked automatically. I’d call the school today and find out what’s going on.

Did you receive federal or state aid? Those are linked to satisfactory academic progress (percentage of successfully completed courses). If you haven’t met that, the college probably can’t award those grants to you.

Can you get an apartment with other students closer to school? Traveling 4 hours/day is too much. Computer science is a time intensive major, and a low GPA isn’t going to help you get interviews.
