Has anyone used Barron's Us History Subject test book? I got the 2007 edition, and I have been taking some practice tests, and some questions seem very detailed. Can anyone tell me about their experience with this book? Good, bad? What other books would u recommend for US history (aiming for 750-800)

Bump? ..

I took AP US Histroy last year, so I mainly used the AMSCO book. I bought Barron's also however. I read the first few chapters and it seemed all right. Then I took 2 practice tests and both times I got 500's. I got so discouraged I stopped using it. But I ended up getting an 800 on the real thing...so I would say that the book itself could be useful, but that the practice tests are way too hard, and too random to be of any help. But I would also use a normal textbook too...but thats just me.

lol ok that makes me feel a lot better.

I think barrons is trying to use their Math 2c book strategy by making it incredibly hard to "over-prep" you, but in history, it doesn't quite have the same effect.

I too took AP US Hist last year, so I'm just using my AP US History Kaplan book to review for the SAT II US Hist. No way the content on the SATII test is more in-depth than what AP required.

This is exactly my experience with the book. Mid-500s on all the Barrons practice tests; 800 on the real one.

I think the AMSCO book is pretty good.

what about the Dummies book?

hey guys i went out and got all the prep books, but since i haven't taken the course (i am canadian) i thought of asking about textbooks. which text would be the best prep for the test>

i got a 500 on the practice test. i've been studying like a madman though so i hope to get 800 ^^

Hmm, two 800 scorers on one thread, both use Barrons yet say its no good.. correlation?

I never read one sentence out of Barrons. I literally did two practice tests, cried in frustration (OK, not really, but it seriously depressed me) and then studied entirely out of AMSCO, Brinkley, and took Sparknotes tests.

Voila.

790 on USH with Barrons. It is totally self contained :)

I am using the Kaplan book right now studying for the Oct. 6 test, and I seem to like it, although my scores seem a little low.

sorry what is "AMSCO"?

Here's my story: I got the Barron's book, read up to the Jacksonian period and was like "hey I'll take a practice test". I got like a freakin 500. I kinda flipped out, threw the book across the room and didn't look at it again. I did no further studying, and even considered canceling my test.

I got an 800 on the real test. The Barron's book is mega hard and may lead to clinical depression reversible only by mind altering drugs.

threw the book across the room... that's so me :)

barron's has always been ridiculously hard, i would recommend going to amazon and looking at the ratings people give on the books.

Personally, i used the dummies book, which was easy to read and understand, but with tests that were fairly similar to the real thing.

Still waiting on my score though

barron's ****es me off
