SAT as a Freshman

I’m a high school freshman intending to take the SAT on January 21st for the Davidson THINK Summer Institute (if anyone has past experiences with this program, or recommends any other, please share it).

I haven’t registered yet because I’m debating on if this is the right choice for me. I’ve been in the 98th percentile on the PSAT 8/9 and amongst top scorers on other national standardized tests, so I’d consider myself a “good test-taker.” However, I am aware that the SAT will be much harder than anything I’ve taken before.

So far, I’ve only done Khan Academy; I do pretty well on Math but fall on Reading. I’d appreciate some guidance regarding practice resources and general tips for the test.

Please share your experiences with the SAT, especially if you’ve taken it on a lower grade than intended as I plan to. Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you!

have you taken the practice test and how did you do? and what did you score? My only concern is that if you eventually apply to colleges that require all scores, you will be required to submit the 9th grade SAT…and I have no doubt other will argue that it is okay as you are only 9th grade…

@annamom I just took my first practice test on Khan Academy and got a 1280 (600M - 680R&W) which is much better than what I was expecting, I did the test following all instructions, yet don’t know if it accurately reflects my actual score. I’ll practice some more over Christmas break to hopefully boost my score. I’m avidly considering taking the SAT on January 21st.

I think it is a good score for a freshman. If look into previous posts, you will see a number of recommendation for Erica L. Meltzer’s books, may be you will find it useful? What Math courses are you taking now?

@annamom I currently take Geometry and participate in my school’s math club, where I’ve been able to learn some Algebra II. I’ll look into those books!
