SAT as a Sophomore?

I took the SAT in 7th grade for the Duke TIP program, and I was very happy with the outcome.

Now that I'm a sophomore, I don't know where I will stand on my scores. If they're anything like my freshman PSAT scores, I think I'll again be happy with my score, but would it be a good idea to take it again in January? I think I'd like to do that to see what areas I need to work on for my junior year.

Also- if I take it in January and don't score as well as I'd hoped, will I have to submit it to colleges that I apply to in 2 years? That's probably a stupid question, but I really have no idea.

Some schools allow score choice, meaning they allow you to pick which scores to send. So if you take the SAT during your sophomore year, you can not send (or “hide,” in your score report) the score come senior year. Other schools do not allow score choice, meaning they expect you to send all your scores from freshman to senior year. Some schools super-score, meaning–whether they allow score choice or not–they consider only the highest scores of each section among multiple scores (e.g., 650/670/750 and 670/700/640 yields a super-score of 670/700/750).

So in light of all this, I lightly do not recommend taking the SAT just to see what areas you need to improve on. It’s better to just take a practice test from the blue book (The Official SAT Study Guide), or from the bunch of online practice tests that the College Board has released on its website over the years (check this thread out: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/766525-official-sat-practice-booklets-past-current.html</a>).

^I concur. Take 2-3 practice exams so you ballpark what score you’ll receive. If you’re happy, by all means take it. If you’re not. Don’t fret you have the rest of sophomore year, all summer, all of junior year, the summer in between junior & senior, and the first few months of senior year to improve your score!

I recommend to take it once in the spring of sophomore year. Once in the fall or winter of your junior year. Then a final time in your spring of your junior year. I’m sure by then you’ll achieve the score you wanted. This way you can spend senior year focusing on grades and applications.
