SAT August 26, 2017 Discussion

I don’t know if it matters, but I like the 37 reading better.

Did anyone’s scores go down this time? My D thought the math was much harder, and her score dropped significantly from the test in June. She is so disappointed. Has anyone had that happen before?

@myfavorites It happens all time. My S studied all summer, about 70 hours total. His math score didn’t change at all and his CR/W went down 10 points. He is beside himself. And… I have to admit I feel awful for him. He really put the time in and it proved to be fruitless. This was his last shot before applying to his dream school ED. Not sure his scores are good enough but… maybe the admissions fairies will be in a good mood on the day they review his app.

@Living61
At the “how do I stack up” section of College Board they ask for the highest M and EW score and reading subscore. Then they compare those numbers to the 50% range of the college of interest. Since they ask for reading subscore I ll go with the highest one I have. Idk if it is truly that important though.

homerdog, He does not know where he wants to apply. Not helpful, I know. I have a mental list, UTexas Honors Business, Rice, Wash U, William & Mary, Vandy,.

@myfavorites My D’s score went down a lot. It was lower this time than the first time she took it without any prep. Surprisingly her math stayed the same even though that’s her weaker area so the big drop was just in verbal. She always scored in the 700s in verbal so EBRW so it was really a shock. I’m curious to look at the section scores to see if it could be a bubbling error. Thankfully, she has one nice score from June so she will stick with that.

@3boys4m3 Mmm. Yes. Those school want high scores. In particular, Vandy and Wash U love the high scores. I was just asking because S19’s goal was a 1520. With his 1540, I think he could be done since it’s equivalent to a 35 ACT. Do you have a different goal in mind?

What score looks better for most schools, a 1570 on the SAT or a 35 on the ACT? Do schools see the subscores? Dd has an 800 on the math on her SAT but only a 35 on the math on her ACT.

Both are top notch scores, and I would submit both scores as you have no real way to know which test, if any, the AOL reading the application will favor. And they do see subscores. Congrats to your d !

Hey guys. I still haven’t received my sat with essay scores back… I called CB and they said that my score was graded, but hasn’t been “put in” yet. Idk what kind of game they are playing, but I hope nothing is wrong with it. There wasn’t any conflicts during testing, and I am sure that I correctly stated my credentials.

@Sejoonjpppp Ugh! Hoping for good scores for you after your long wait. If they seem “off” to you, it would be hard to not question what happened to your test.

@homerdog Thank you so much

@Sejoonjpppp Keep us posted…this all seems very odd. Is this your first sitting for the SAT?

@ThinkOn Yes this is my first time. Hopefully I get it back soon…CB said to call back if I don’t get it by Friday.

Hey guys. CB and ETS (educational testing service) said that my scores are going to be delayed for about 2 weeks, because my score increased too much from the last time I took the SAT, so they think it’s suspicious, which is why they’re going through my test more thoroughly. I think this is crazy, because the last time I took the SAT was in 8th grade (I’m a junior now), and I took it to see what I would get. I obviously did very poorly (scored a 1700 old sat), but don’t they understand that people improve and get smarter? I think that this is absolutely preposterous, and I cannot see the reasoning behind them double checking it. I am hoping that they won’t lower my actual score or anything… @homerdog @ThinkOn

@Sejoonjpppp Wow. I’ve never heard of that. And how could they prove anything? Maybe it’s as simple as confirming the date that you took the old test so they realize it’s been a while. Anyway, how could anyone even cheat on an SAT? You have to bring ID, etc.

I wouldn’t sweat it. Unless you have something to worry about, sounds like you have good news waiting for you.

Years ago, my brother had the opposite issue. His scores dropped dramtically. His test was flagged. They went thru it and discovered he had bubble errors.

I would remind them of the last time you took it - 4 years ago!

The ACT is notorious for doing this and very unforgiving. The ACT does this purely based on statistical analysis from an incease in scores. This was discussed at length recently on this thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-act-tests-test-preparation/1987200-act-testing-wrongly-accusing-cheating-2017-p1.html

For this reason and because I had a close friend affected by such antics of the ACT, I’ve had a bias against the ACT for years and kept to the SAT. This is the first time that I have heard of the SAT doing this type of thing as well, but hopefully their approach of investigating is more holistic and they just don’t make a decision based purely on numbers. And it looks like they are as they are investigating before making any accusations like the ACT does.

I know it’ll be a hard time waiting, but I’m hopeful they will look at the fact that you took it 4 years ago. Does the College Board have other scores for you in their database to review (e.g., PSAT scores, AP scores)?

@Sejoonjpppp I was suspecting this increase in score type stuff might be the case for the delay, that’s the basis for the question I posed to you earlier. I know it’s crazy hard waiting…have you told your parents yet about the situation?
