SAT August 26, 2017 Discussion

what was the answer of #38 math cal section?

I would love for y’all to come back and post your scores - to see if perception matches reality. My d said she was pleased with the test also. I will ask her more about it later. Just getting off work.

I’ve been reading that, just because the test felt easy, the scores won’t necessarily reflect that. The tests are not curved in the way a test at school might be curved. They are “equated”. The CB decided ahead of time how easy each section is compared to tests given at other sittings. If this test was indeed easier, the raw score conversion chart will be harder. Maybe one wrong drops you down to a 780 and two wrong to a 760 where, on other tests, you could get twice as many wrong for each of those scores. Seems like an easier test favors those who know their stuff but were also very careful not to make any mistakes.

Gatormama-- Good point! I would also love to see if scores match their perception. As homerdog points out, an “easier” test doesn’t always equate to a high score.
Also, not everyone thought yesterday’s test was easy. D thought the test was hard, but did enjoy the reading passages more than those in the May test.

@homerdog I took the SAT in October 1, 2016 and March 11, 2017. This is my last chance to get a better score!!

@rohitk That is exactly how I felt while taking the test!!! I’m glad someone else felt the same as I did.

@homerdog I don’t think there’s ever been a test where one wrong answer has dropped you down to a 780. That aside, missing two or three questions will probably hurt more than average.

On practice test five and practice test seven, two wrong questions on math was a 770. One wrong was 790. The CB skipped over 780 for those tests. Maybe this math section will be scored like that towards the top.

When are the results due?

I think Sept 18.

Just a comment: clearly people on here are either highly motivated students or their parents so if a test felt easy may simply be the byproduct of being seriously well-prepared.

Funny, my son said the same thing regarding calculator vs. non-calculator math. Non was definitely more challenging. He has no idea how well he did on that. He did not care for his essay prompt and felt that was probably the weakest part of this SAT. Fortunately he already has a decent SAT score, so we won’t stress over this too much. It will be interesting to see the results though!

@BingeWatcher & @homerdog scores should be released on September 15th

Funny the different thoughts on the test. I have only heard how difficult it was!

I thought the SAT yesterday felt pretty good. The reading passages were interesting but the last science one stumped me on a couple of questions. The other passages were pretty straightforward in my opinion, but who knows, I’m terrible at estimating how well I might have done. Grammar was the best out all the other sections – literally bless that there weren’t any transition questions because those usually get me. Both math sections seemed more straightforward than usual, too, but a circle question and a question I swore I learned back in 7th grade just got the best of me :(. But the calculation section was much easier than I thought, because usually I skip around question 15, but I made it til the end – but with that said, I skipped two of the grid ins. Hopefully that won’t affect my score too much. But I’m also interested to see how scores line up with perceptions on the test. Fingers crossed

This is the first time that I’ve ever filled in all the questions! Then again the last time I was this confident about a test I got a C. x) Can’t wait to see how others did!

Same. In January I took the SAT and it was not as good as I thought it was…but maybe this time I’ll be proven wrong  I have a question for all the test takers: are you guys still prepping for the SAT for October just in case September’s scores aren’t too good? Or are you guys waiting for scores first and then choosing to prep for November’s test? Just asking because I have no idea what my backup plan is if I don’t do too well on this test…

My son had similar feedback on test. He found non-calc section more challenging than calc section - a reverse of the way he felt about those sections on March test. He found Reading Comp had some trickier questions but he thought the Science passage was very interesting. The Grammar felt easier than March or practice tests but it may have been the test prep where he focused on it more than last time.

@jellyjam123 In my case, no matter what I get on my SAT my ACT score will be higher. But if I hadn’t taken the ACT I would definitely sign up for the October test and cancel if I’m satisfied with my August scores! I feel like that’s the best option when you’re short on time.

@luciole i assume you got a 36 on the ACT. why did you bother with the SAT then?
