What is SAT cutoff for Duke? Is 1960 really low, even though I'm URM? Will Duke automatically reject me? What about GPA? Which is more important: GPA or individual grades?

Duke looks more at your four years of high school curriculum and your GPA than at your test scores. I don't believe they'll automatically reject anyone.

Also, remember that there are no statistics for the new SAT so we just don't know what the averages are. That being said, 1960 is NOT THAT LOW. Don't panic about it, because there's nothing you can do about it now.

2/3 *1960 = 1306. There are people at Duke with scores in that range, but they are few and far between. a score like that is definitely NOT grounds for automatic rejection. however, the rest of your application will have to be stellar.

I got rejected with a 1270. GPA 2.8 UW 3.1 W
My essays were amazing though. Out of state, florida. Duke was my top choice, UNC is my second. You think I could get in??

UNC is extremely tough to get into for out-of-staters

I'm sorry but I really can't see essays, no matter how amazing, making up for a 2.8 and a 1270.

Yeah...maybe a 1270 and a 3.8 or so, but your GPA is really low for the "best of the best" schools.

mga120... Are you stating that you received a rejection letter? Were you an Early Decision or Regular Decision?

early decision

It makes me wonder what JJ Reddick's SAT score was...

I'm pretty sure recruited athletes are basically shoe-ins regardless of their SAT score.

Thats about were my SAT scores are, but the rest of application is (at least I feel) excellent. I had my counselor show a history of poor standardized test results dating back to 6th grade. I hope that gets looked at and they recognize that my test scores don't accurately reflect who I am. It still really worries me, especially for Pratt.

OOS and with those stats? Sorry to be blunt, but don't count on it.

My in-state friend was waitlisted at UNC with a 1360/1600 SAT, 3.3 UW GPA, and leadership positions in sports, academic clubs, and volunteer clubs. I'm pretty sure her essays/recommendations were superb as well. Good luck to ya, but don't count on it.

EDIT: wait you meant you got rejected at Duke, and want to get into UNC right?

1480 on the old SAT (which is a 2220 new SAT) was considered the cutoff for a good score for non URM, non legacy, non athlete candidates, according to a former Duke admissions officer. Plus, this was a few years ago, so it's probably gotten more competitive since then.

She said that the majority of candidates who were non "hooked" and who were admitted presented those test scores or higher.

2230 hoes! dukes the highest from 2 sittings right?

I heard Duke accepted a student with 1270 SAT and much higher GPA than mga120's. So, I assume there isn't any cutoff for SAT score.

1480 cannot be the cutoff, that is above Duke's average SAT score... which is probably around 1450 on the old SAT

1450 still seems high.

I'm talking averages. You wanna know what's high? Average SAT score for Caltech is 1520.

But if you want a "cutoff" I'd say 1400 is safe enough. Below that your essays would have to kick some serious ... rear end. Unless you live in NC, in which case it is easier to get into Duke.

well... there is no "safe" score, i think we are talking about the "won't be rejected simply because of" score. in my opinion, a 1300 is good enough to not be rejected simply because of your SAT. however a 1300 SAT applicant needs a hook. moving on up, a 1400 SAT is a solid score, but the applicant will need an amazing application. a 1500 SAT scorer can lack something in their application and still get in. a 1500 is still no guarantee... valedictorian 1500+ people get rejected too (good friend of mine)

so what about a 1480 in-state, top 2% of class? :-/
