Prompt: Can knowledge be a burden rather than a benefit?

Ever since he first walked on earth, man has been hungry for knowledge. His curiosity has been incited by common natural phenomena like fire and germination of seeds and more exotic ones like aurora borealis (northern lights) and nebular explosions. Due to his undying inquisitiveness, man has evolved trenchant reasoning ability, which he has applied in various domains such as science, literature and architecture.

Man has employed this powerful tool of knowledge to produce brilliant inventions and discoveries. Yet, over the ages, as man's nature has become more greedy than ever, he has begun to breach vital boundaries by tampering the processes and balances of mother nature. During the industrial revolution of 1700s, pioneering technologies such as the steam engine and novel concepts such as capitalism, changed the face of human society. The revolution was hailed in the name of "progress" and was considered to be an excellent example of the application of human knowledge. Yet, gradually, mankind's machines began taking a toll on nature, as factories and trains gargled out sooty smoke, released harmful gases and expelled polluting material into water. Black smoke clouded industrial towns and life became gloomy. Yet, man did not stop at this and invented nuclear bombs, missiles and polyethenes. War devastated the society, yet man did not stop his quest for using knowledge limitlessly. He went on to discover genetic engineering, the potent weapon, which has opened the door for the construction of bio-bombs.

Clearly, as man is going deeper and deeper into the realm of knowledge, he discovering that more harm is being done than good. And indeed, it is rightfully speculated that the earth's doom would be at the hands of homo sapiens, who, today, are wielding more knowledge than what their mortal minds are capable of handling. Clearly, today, knowledge is but a poison in society.
