Assignment: Should people make more of an effort to make things private? Write an essay.

In the modern-day world of technology and communication, it seems impossible to keep anything private. The increasing ability for us to communicate with each other over long distances is economically and socially beneficial; yet, there are severe drawbacks to this self-expression. People should make more of an effort to keep some things private, as humans, as individuals, are unique to each other and we all have our private lives and information. By giving away private information to the outside world, people are increasing the risks of cyberpredation, identity theft, and other crimes. Specifically, there are predators online who can use this information to fulfill their own goals.
In one instance, a growing number of social networking sites, such as Myspace or Facebook, directly correlates to an increasing number of online sex predators. These criminals can use the private information of people, such as phone numbers and addresses, to locate their whereabouts in the physical world and abduct them. In recent years, numerous teenagers have disappeared suspiciously after communicating with strangers online.
In the educational world, numerous people have committed plagiarism by directly copying other works found on the Internet. They have used resources designed by others and have claimed them to be their own original ideas. This not only discredits the owner of the original work, but also can give them undeserved prestige or fame. People can simply copy reports written by others and get awarded for this seemingly "original" work.
In addition, this lack of privacy in the modern world has a myriad of disadvantages that can cause ill effects. People can use private information of others and use it to their own advantage. For example, robbers and thieves can look up information online to help them in their heist. Also, people can stalk others online by learning about their lives and situations, and later manipulating them. By giving away personal information, people are limiting their own rights and liberties.
All in all, privacy needs to be respected as well as protected in the modern world. Too many people are being taken advantage of by others who steal their privacy. Private information can be dangerous, especially, when in the hands of irresponsible people. With the growing cyberworld, it is now easier for criminals to locate their prey and commit crimes successfully. To protect ourselves from these intrusions on our privacy, we need to make more of an effort to protect our private information, as some things are better off unsaid.
