How's SAT II Lit as a jr if you prep for it? How close is it to Crit Reading? (maybe better to wait till Oct?)

I would like to know too, esp. from those who've already taken it. Everytime I enter a thread about AP Lit, there are not many responses or they are vague and nonspecific

D (college soph) took Lit SATII in November of senior year with no prep and got 760 which was 96 percentile. If you are a strong reader/good English student you will do fine.

That's actually one of the most encouraging pieces of advice I've heard in a while. There's something to this whole parenting thing...

Not to take away any encouragement :) but D also took SAT II writing and got a 690, which for her was pretty low 76 percentile). She had 750 SATI verbal. She has always been an incredibly good writer- one of her main strengths. At the time, I hadn't discovered CC so the score didn't concern us and she got into all her colleges and is a soph at Rice. So-I guess it didn't hurt much. Her bf (also a Rice soph pre-med) got an 800 SAT II Writing, and isn't as strong a writer as D. I guess my point is that to a large extent the whole SAT thing is a crap-shoot. There are some subjects for which you can prepare (sciences, languages etc.) but some of them you just go in and do your best. It is just one part of the whole package and I wouldn't worry too much about it.

The SAT Writing (old II or New SAT) is all about writing to spec, not writing for the ages. And getting lucky with your readers.

For the literature test, if you enjoy partipating in english class discussions, and enjoy the more challenging works you study, I think you are a good candidate for the lit test. I would suggest practicing by just taking the test in Real SAT II's. If you do well in that - or think you could with a little more familiarity with a test, go for it.

BTW, as Momofwildchild says, it is part of the whole package. If you pick and choose your tests carefully, you should be able to pull solid scores without having to retake.

my s took the SAT II Literature test last June- was planning on doing the math II c, but that morning changed his mind and took the Lit.! He is an avid reader and writer- made an 800.
