SAT II Subject Tests Necessary

I am trying to decide whether to take the SAT II subject tests. From what I can tell, only the top colleges require them. I am going to be applying to schools such as BU, Northeastern, various state schools in New England down to DC, and private schools such as RPI or RIT for engineering. Thanks.

Here’s a list of colleges requiring or recommending subject tests. If you’re not planning on applying to any of these schools, there’s no need to take any subject tests.

[Institutions Using Subject Tests](<a href=“What were SAT Subject Tests? - College Board Blog”>What were SAT Subject Tests? - College Board Blog)

Not sure of the basis for that College Board list but it has errors and appears to count schools that require the SAT IIs only from homeschooled students. It even lists colleges that absolutely refuse to consider the subject tests for admission – example UIUC. A much better list of colleges that require, recommend or consider SAT IIs is here: [Compass: Admissions Requirements](<a href=“SAT Subject Test Requirements and Recommendations”>SAT Subject Test Requirements and Recommendations).

^ Didn’t know about that - thanks for pointing this out.

Agree the first link has mistakes, they have Brandeis down as requiring subject tests and it doesn’t, not even for homeschoolers. The second link is no better it also says that Brandeis requires them.

Just speaking from experience here. If you’re going to try to get into an engineering program, take the Math Level 2 at least and either Physics or Chemistry. My son took the Math Level 2 and Chemistry last year (for his UT and University of IL applications) but not the Physics. I think he could have taken the Physics as well, but he figured he already was taking one science test and that was enough.
