Sat Ii

How important are SAT II's in relation to the SAT I and ACT, and how does it look if you didn't take a language SAT II (duke says that it encourages applicants to take it..)?

I don't know exactly how important SAT IIs are compared to SAT Is because mine were comparable but I would guess they are probably pretty important, especially writing for trinity or math for pratt. I didn't take a language SAT II either so I wouldn't worry--I think they encourage taking one for placement more so than evaluation.

thanks, that makes me feel a little bit better!

incollege88, ur comments really made me worried...

i got 1490 SAT I
writing 590
maths IIC 800
chemistry 800

appying to trinity

I just talked about writing because it is the only SAT II figure Duke releases--last year its middle 50% was 680-760.

Though that 590 isn't awesome I believe your other SAT IIs definitely compensate for it, making your average SAT II=730, which is not bad at all. This is especially true if you're interested in going into science or math, or if English is not your first language. Don't worry too much, your scores look very strong otherwise.

that was really very good to know, incollege....i am doing a physics major...

btw which college r u in ??

Definately as a physics major youre in good shape. I'm just guessing here, but you probably also have a 750+ (possibly a 800) math, right? I'd say you're in great shape SATwise. I don't think they'd take you're verbal and writing into much account. And even then, you're not too bad.
Question, though. Why didn't you take SAT II Physics? Did you take AP last year? What was your score?

I got a B in A-Levels Chemistry ....so took the Chemistry test
Got an A in A-Levels Physics....that why didnt take physics
just wanted to make a point that I am good at chemistry as well.....dunno how much that'll work
thanx a lot for the comments mekrob !!

SO does Duke consider SAT II's besides your three highest? I only put my top three SAT II scores on my apps, (i know they get them all).
My three highest were 800 US Hist, 770 Writing, and 690 Lit, and then I had 660 Chem, and 630 Math IIC, but I only took those because of this other program I had to apply to, and my intended major at Duke is poli sci/international relations. I also have 5's in AP Euro, AP US Histo, and AP Lang, and a 3 in AP CHem and 720 (M) and 790 (V) SAT I, and alot of history/humanities EC's. How much is my 660 and 630 going to hurt?

So do you live in England, ahtisab? I'm just guessing. I don't know that much about A-Level courses and I assume that's like AP. But colleges would still like to you have standarized tests for those. (again, don't know that much about A-level. Duke will, probably)
Ditzy, you are in the same situation as ahtisab. Your other scores aren't horrible, just not excellent, like your interest-oriented tests are. Since you have shown interest in your EC's, then you should be pretty good. I kinda hope that I'm wrong since I am a language/social sciences major, and have mixed scores. US Hist: 4/760, IIC 690, Writing 640, Spanish 680 (but only two years), and a 3 on AP Bio. I wish I had better humanities scores. Oh well.

mekrob, I live in Nepal....we have A-level courses here......

i think i shud've taken physics SAT II instead of chem......

if u got 800 chem doesn't really matter.

cool......

I didn't know they released the numbers for Writing. I am 15.87th percentile at Duke for Writing. Isn't that great? Sad thing is, that's probably going to be the highest from my school out of our four applicants.

released the numbers ?? which ones ?? 87th percentile at Duke !! i dont think i got that correctly !!

where did u find the numbers? id like to know what my percentile is.

You have to use statistics. I was just using a mean of 720 (or was it a median, not sure), because that seemed approriate. You take your score - 720, then divide by 60 and then you have to use the normal distribution scale. And I was mistaken, I'm only 10 percentile at Duke. That cheered me up. (640 writing)

dunno what my percentile will be !!!! 590 in writing !!!

Well, I guess it's good though that you're from a different country. Otherwise, that writing score would hurt you badly. The TOEFL should heal any damages done by your writing. Anyway, it's about 1.5th percentile. But a 590 still isn't too bad with the average out of all students. About 50th, isn't it? That's brutal how you can do decent nation-wide, and then horrible at a certain school.
