SAT II's and there Importance in the Admissions process?

Okay a few questions.

First, how important are SAT II's in the admissions process at certain schools, for example BC, Georgetown, UVA etc? Also I'm not sure which schools do this, but I know a few like BC give you the option to replace the regular SAT and SAT II's with just an ACT, which doesn't really make sense to me? Do colleges that do this really care about your SAT II scores?

Also, when submitting your SAT II's to colleges, what is the lowest scores that colleges look at as respectable? I know people say that 700's + is a good score, but can you submit them if below 700, and how far below?

Thank you

Is there any thread like that yesterday?
Anyway, read the list on the link below:

@billcsho‌ This is my first time in this section and I hadn’t really been looking at the older threads, however I sae the thread you were talking about and that one was simply whether or not certain schools required them, while I meant to ask what the importance of the SAT II’s were as it seemed you could take the ACT and not have to do subject tests, which didnt make sense to me.

I am now college-bound. As a junior, I decided against the SAT. I took the ACT. I was also advised to take 2-3 subject tests. I would say that for top tier schools, you’ll need to perform relatively well. I ended up scoring 800 on Math II, and 750 on both Us History and Bio. So, I’d suggest scores above 700 for the caliber of school you’ve listed.

@noel597‌ Thank you, that is what I’m shooting for but I feel my scores may be mid-high 600’s. How would that affect my chances? My SAT is at a 1960 if that helps(680CR, 660M, 620W) and I will retake. Also where are you attending in the fall if I may ask?

I will be attending Penn to study bio. basis of behavior and linguistics :)

I also got into the 3 schools you listed above, so if you want to PM me for some more advice, I’d be glad to help.

FYI. The median SAT2 score is around 650 (varies with subject thought). So if you are at mid 600s, you are just about average. In general, 700+ are consider decent score and 750+ are good score. Obviously, that would depend on what schools you are applying. The test score requirement are rather arbitrary. It is hard to understand why some schools would take ACT in lieu of SAT1+SAT2 while some schools don’t need any SAT2 at all. Anyway those information are listed on the document I linked above. For competitive schools, take SAT2 even they just recommend it. For example, Stanford only recommend 2 SAT2 scores, while 95% of admitted students do submit them.

I will be attending Georgetown in the fall and I submitted 3 subject tests as recommended I think 700+ are definitely preferable, with 750+ probably giving you a good boost - but don’t think its the end of the world if your scores don’t come out that way. I had one 750+, one mid 600s and one disaster score - sub 600. My sub 600 score was in a subject a had straight A’s in and a 7 for my IB exam though - so they may have just written off as a bad day. Anyway - I still got in! So try your best but don’t freak out too much

@SummerAus Georgetown is one of my top choices so that is really reassuring! What was your SAT/ACT Scores as well if I may ask?

@billcsho‌ Thanks for explaining, still seems odd to me with the whole ACT or SAT+ SAT II haha

@noel597 I’ll PM you thank you!

I won’t share my specific score but I did very well on CR and not so well on maths. (Georgetown doesn’t count writing). I do just want to say however that I did have a fair few other things going for me ( IB diploma, finished 1st in my class, extensive ECs, unique background and writing is my strong suit so essays were very solid. This may very we’ll be the case with you too, so hopefully I’ve just reassured you that SAT IIsnare not the be all and end all, not that it’s any easier to get into Georgetown than you thought before - it’s not.

Daughter was accepted last year to UVA as an OOS applicant with sub-700 subject tests. SAT Reasoning superscore was 2250.
