If a school requires them for freshman admits, are they still required for transfers? What if I had not taken them in high school, are they still required? I've checked the schools websites, but they don't offer an answer.

Usually the websites are clear on this. You may have to call them.

If you list the schools, someone here may have first hand experience.

yeah- list the schools. Most don't require them.. stanford 'strongly recommends' that you take at least 2, or something like that.

for those that have taken them how tough was it to study for them compared to the regular SAT?

i'm thinking of taking them just because of stanford and their obsession with standardized test scores(even for junior transfers). I found this booklet:

It contains sample questions from all the SAT 2 subject tests.

thanks for that racnna, I'm also thinking of taking them given that a good many of the schools I'm considering either require or "strongly recommend" taking them as well.

I know Vandy does not require them.

What about:
Cornell
UVA
Penn
Northwestern

Northwestern- recommend
Cornell- you'll need to arrange to have official records of all your secondary school and college-level work and standardized-test scores (if you've already taken these exams) sent directly to us
UVA- Students who have attempted fewer than 30 transferable hours of course work also must meet freshman requirements for admission (please see separate section on freshman admission) and must submit official high school transcripts and SAT/ACT scores. The SAT/ACT requirement is waived for applicants who are 25 years of age or older.
Penn-The SAT II: Subject Tests are not required
