SAT IIs

I know Carleton recommends SAT II, but I can't find anything at all about average scores for Carleton. I'm looking for something like the info about the distribution of SAT I scores.

I'm a perspective physics major so would it hurt me if I didn't get a 800 on the Math II?

I’m pretty sure that since SAT IIs aren’t required, they don’t publish that information. I could be wrong, though.

And no, I doubt getting anything less than an 800 will hurt you, even as a prospective physics major. Of course, that’s relatively speaking–are we talking 700s, 600s, 500s…? It always seemed to me that Carleton recommended SAT subject tests because they typically add to your application as opposed to counting against you.

Well I haven’t gotten my scores back, but I’m expecting 760-790.

As an incoming freshmen for the Carleton class of 2013, and as a potential math/bio/physics/econ major, I can tell you a 790 on Math II didn’t–to my knowledge–“hurt” me in the admissions process. And any score in the 760-790 range should probably be regarded as commendable, not detrimental.

My daughter never took a single SAT II, yet was accepted based on strong SAT and ACT scores, good grades, ECs, etc. It may be advisable to have SAT II’s, but not 100% necessary if you have an otherwise attractive resume.

Someone posted a link on the Williams thread that shows that 32% of the class at Williams scored 750 or higher on the SAT subject tests, and another 25% scored between 700 and 740, with the balance (43%) scoring below 700. My guess is that the norm for Carleton is about the same, or maybe just a little bit lower, since Williams is a little more selective.

Williams, btw, requires applicants to submit scores from two SAT subject tests.

SAT II can’t be of much significance for an admission decision. It’s an hour test that can at best confirm a judgment of someone. However, the language SAT II can be very important to admitted students. A score of about 700 satisfies the language requirement, i.e. 3 terms of a language at Carleton

If you do well, submit them.

If you don’t do well, don’t submit them.
