I took the SAT in the fall and got an 1170 without studying whatsoever. I will be taking the August, October, and December SAT (if necessary) I would like to score between 1380-1420. How likely would this be with studying and how much would I need to do? I would love any advice/ personal experience.
It is certainly an attainable goal, but how much studying you must do to achieve it and the best method of studying will vary by person.
Get started now. Finding time to prepare will be more difficult once school begins.
It’s not just about how long or how much you study. To improve as much as you would like to improve, you have to know what to study–which isn’t always so obvious–and you have to acquire certain deeper skills which are harder to self-teach. For example, learning how to be a good critical-reader is not a skill that most people are able to teach themselves.
There are things that certain bright motivated students can teach themselves, though. These include grammar rules, the math concepts tested on the SAT, and vocab (which is very helpful for improving reading scores for most students scoring in your vicinity).
Many students also see significant improvement merely from familiarizing themselves with the test and learning how to better manage their time, but this is generally more immediate.
