Topic: Can success be disastrous?

Hugh Laurie, a famous British comedian, while talking about his success in an interview, said, ‘I am cynical of success. Whenever I see that I am becoming successful, I try to turn things over so as to avoid success.’ It is very true in our daily lives that success tends to harm us more than it does us good.

I have been a victim of the disastrous effects of the pursuit of success. When my high school freshman year started, I had my eyes fixed upon the ‘straight-A’s’ tag, which was my view of the ultimate reward. I did studied rain or shine and was successful in achieving straight A’s, but it was only after achieving this goal was I was able to realize what I had done to myself. Not only had I become less social amongst my circle of friends, but I had also strained my eyes to the point of becoming bespectacled. Reminiscing about the past, I realized with regret that my life was no longer full of computer games and parties that were once very important to me. I had indeed lost a lot in my pursuit of success.

Similarly, Marie Curie, one of the most famous scientists of all time, on her road to success, underwent difficulties that later proved to be so harmful to her health that they resulted in her early demise. Working assiduously in a laboratory long into the wee hours of the night, she was constantly exposed to nuclear radiation, which, she later found out, had a detrimental effect on her health. Moreover, due to so muchwork, she gradually had to distance herself from family life. Although she did win the Nobel Prize twice, but her work constantly affected her health, and she passed away a an early age, not living long enough to enjoy her life.

It can thus be seen that blind-folded pursuit of success, although does lead to success, but often results in consequences. These consequences can even be more undesirable than not achieving success in the first place. One should do his best to forecast the deleterious effects of success, weigh them against the benefits of his success, and then judge whether he should work for success or not.

you scared me… i definitely have a week to prep for math II not 5 days.

Im in Asia! We are about 12 hours ahead of you guys!

i heard graders do not like when you use quotes (except famous ones like “Victory is sweetest when you’ve known defeat” or something like that). If you quote Hugh Laurie, they are goingto think you overstudied and memorized the quote.

overall, i’d give it 8-9.

iffy opening, solid structure, nice prose, good ending

now to the main point… i dont think your essay is completely relevant to the topic. The prompt asks whether success can be disastrous, NOT whether pursuit of success is disastrous…more apt examples could be Britney Spears, famous sport personalities etc…

i’d say a 9////but higher if you can prove that your essay is relevant to the topic

I like a thesis statement… an intro that explains what you will talk about…

but… then again. Your first argument is decent, and your second one is rather good. I think it will get a 10 or 11. CC’ers grade way harder than Collegeboard does… :)

8/9
you have some bad grammatical errors… but that’s because this isn’t your native language. The essay has potential though! Keep working

Thanks y’all!
