I'm signed up for the June 1st SAT (in 44 days!!) and this is my second day on the Blue Book. I'm getting about 1/3 of the Math questions wrong, which puts me - probably - in the 400s. Who knows?!!

I might be going slightly insane from the stress but anyway: I hereby publicly declare that I am DETERMINED TO KILL THE SAT MATH SECTION. I'M GOING TO GET AN 800!!!!!!!!! I'M GONNA WORK SOOOOOOOO HARD!!!!!!!!!

NewYorkBeanzie,
You are probably going to receive a great deal of conflicting advice about which SAT books are “the best”, I suggest you take such advice with the proverbial grain of salt. Please listen to this carefully, there is no one size fits all when it comes to SAT Math. There are a few of us on this board that make at least a part of our income by working with students to help them improve their SAT scores and I am fairly certain that they will all tell you that what works for one student will not work as well for another.

What I will tell you is that just taking tests in the Blue Book is not enough in and of itself to dramatically improve your performance. You must examine your performance on each practice test, determine which questions give you the most difficulty. After you have done this for 3 practice tests you should have sufficient data to determine your weak points. Figure out why you chose the answer you chose, what errors do you consistently make? Once you have identified your problems attack them.

Now, I am biased, but I think it might be most helpful to work with a tutor in your area that has a track record. Ask upper class students who have worked with tutors, you will be surprised how many there are, and get recommendations from them. When you have a few names, arrange to meet with them, you are going to interview them, remeber they will be your employee.

Buy Grubers and go through it. The score you are getting now isn’t because you make silly mistakes, it’s because you don’t know all the material that is being tested. After going through Grubers, you should pretty much know everything except for maybe the occasional level 5 problem. You should be scoring 650-700 after finishing Grubers. Then I would suggest you go through Dr. Chungs. It’s pretty much SAT Math on steroids, all the questions are difficult, but it will (over)prepare you very well for the level 5 questions. By now the only thing that will be stopping you from an 800 is careless mistakes. These can be avoided by being very careful (duh) and also finishing the test early and then rechecking. After going through Dr. Chungs you should be able to solve regular SAT math problems very, very quickly. Good luck!
