My SAT scores are 730 (CR) 690 (WR) 630 (M). I've decided that I want to pursue chemical engineering. The thing is, according to my SATs it doesn't look like I'm suited for math/science. I don't understand why math score is so low... I've been in honors/AP math classes all highschool with above a 96. Right now I'm in AP Physics and I have a 97. I've always been one of the best, if not best students in my math and science classes. I'm 6th in my class of 530 and I have a 97 unweighted GPA. I'm so discouraged with my math score. Should I give up on chemical engineering? Any similar stories out there? Any advice? Perhaps, comfort?! sigh

is this your first time taking it? even though you're talking about math, in critical reading, the first time i got a 550 and i was critically depressed (no pun intended)...im in ap english this year, last year, and honors for 2 years before. i always was annoyed by reading but i knew sat reading was a different game. it ook it a second time and raised it to a 640 and then the 3rd trime raised it to a 700. even though that's kind of rare, you have to keep practicing the sat game bc its trickier than school math. order the score service report and see if you get hte easy questions wrong by careless mistakes or you need to work on the more difficult ones..good luck and stay in there!

Did you take the SAT II Math?

It's not uncommon for students to do much better on the Math SAT IIs than on the SAT I M. The SAT I M tests your bubble test skills and your ability to apply ninth-grade concepts consistently. The SAT II Math comes much closer to testing your real aptitude for this stuff.

I've known bunches of people who had a real talent for math and science but had a bad day and didn't do well on the SAT M.

Moreover, my guess is that if you did a bunch of practice sections your score on that section would zooooom, as Lauren A suggests.

Don't worry. Just practice and retake if you can. Even if not, you shouldn't feel like you're bad at math just because you're bad at the SAT Math. That's kind of like assuming that you're a terrible baseball player because you had a bad day at the batting cages. Not the same; not the same at all.

Thanks, guys. Yeah, I'm going to take the SAT II in Math II in December. Hopefully, it will actually reflect my ability... :)
