Hello all,
I recently took the SAT and got 2330 (800 CR, 730 M, 800 W). I know this is a great score, but I also know that 730 is a little low for math for top schools (i.e. Ivy League, public Ivies, Stanford, etc). So, my question is this: is 730 M a score to worry about? And, does having two 800s make up for the relatively low math score?
Thanks for the input.
No.
That said, SAT scores are but one part of the application. Plenty of 2400 applicants get rejected every year from their “dream school.”
I wouldn’t say that they make up for it, since CR and W have nothing to do with math, but it’s not a horrible score. True, it’s on the low side, but as long as you’re within the range (710-800 usually) I think you’ll be fine. It also depends on some other things: Do you plan to study math or science in college, in which case they’ll look more critically at your score? Do you have other ways in which you can show your ability in math? For example: extracurriculars, awards, AP Calc scores, Math Level I/II Subject Tests, even your grades in math all throughout high school, especially if you’ve taken honors/advanced classes, can show admissions officers your capability in math
Also, do you have any hooks, and how does your GPA compare? Often, these things can make up for a lacking SAT (not that yours is, but in terms of the math section)
Are you interested in a math or science major? if so, you should worry now, but I know of some english majors in Ivies with low math scores that still get in.
