SAT Score Dilemma

My son is applying to some schools that say they do not superscore the SATs. Here are his scores:

CR: Jan: 590 77% March: 670 92%

Math: Jan: 760 98% March: 670 90%

Writing: Jan: 630 87% (essay 9) March: 630 87% (essay 8)

Total Score:

March: 1980 June: 1970 Super score: 2060

I guess this would mean that those schools would only consider the January test, but the March one (which is the effect of him getting some tutoring on how to take the CR section of the test) shows a nice increase in CR. So the question is...for a school that won't consider both scores, would they rather see math and CR be similar, or would the higher math score be better?

My son is undecided but will probably not be going into engineering.

Thanks for any input!

CollegeBoard sends ALL scores to colleges; you can’t pick and choose which ones. The colleges he is applying to probably don’t super score because they use them to determine financial aid/merit scholarships. So . . . you don’t have to choose. When it comes to merit aid, they will probably take the highest combined score. When it comes to admissions, they will see all the scores, see the increase in CR, and, as long as he meets the standard for the college, move on to the rest of his application.

SAT scores are merely the qualifiers. In most cases, they don’t determine whether a student is admitted or not.

Hi Momwaiting…college board now has score choice. However, your input still makes sense from a merit aid standpoint…thank you!

Wow. I didn’t know that they had changed their policy. In that case, I’d send the highest score in his intended field.

I’d send both and let college decide, but I think the March score looks better - higher total and higher verbal is less common. (Student is not going into engineering.)

I’d send both, too–you want to provide as complete a picture of your son’s abilities as possible (and even colleges that don’t superscore want that complete picture). In fact, ScoreChoice will probably cause many institutions to rephrase the way they describe their treatment of scores.

another vote in the “send both” camp. Is he done or considering another retake?

Send both … and special congrats on the 760.

Collegeboard has changed its policy, BUT it will adhere to each college’s own requirement - some colleges want to see all, and some don’t. You can’t count on only sending the best scores yet.
