I recently took my SAT for a second time and scored a 2060 (670 V, 680M, 710W). As an in-state student looking to attend UNC-CH, would it be advisable to take the test a third time in October (I plan to apply early), or should this score be sufficient for admission? Please note that I am in the top ten students of a class of over 350 (about a 4.8 GPA) and have decent EC's (Nothing great, nothing horrible).

I would guess that score would be fine (and consistent--nothing lopsided) and would not suggest (anybody) taking it a 3rd time. I also doubt your score would change much. They also seem to be interested in knowing that you took the toughest curriculum in your high school (and did well in those courses). Your rank and your GPA looks great, too. My advice is not to worry-- but that's just my advice. ;) Also put some thought and effort into your essays; they really read those. Good luck!

I am an OOS incoming freshman and I got only 20 points higher than you, so I'm sure you'll be okay.

If you're really worried, try taking the ACT. I found it a lot easier.

You're fine. Don't waste your time or money on a third try.

If I got in with my SAT score, you definitely will. Mine was Math-480, Writing-690, Verbal-720 for an overall 1200. Make sure you write good essays. They love essays that are original and well written.

you're golden for getting in I'd say

You're probably fine, but the way I look at things is if you feel like you have a weakness you can fix, go try and fix it! If you don't mind spending the money to try and raise that score, there really is no harm in trying. If you raise it - awesome! That'll ease your worries as you apply to UNC. If you don't - your current score isn't so bad. But imagine if you, for some reason, were not admitted to UNC, or were deferred. You'd regret not retaking the SAT.

I don't know how likely that is, and it probably isn't too likely, but I'd think about that before deciding for sure whether or not to retake the SAT.

My daughter was admitted this year on 1570 -CR + MATH + Essay, so it is not all considered by the SAT score. She is 7th in her class of 362. Her weighted GPA is 4.75 and unweighted is 3.88. She was a cheerleader on two different teams throughout high school, also a Wendy's high school heisman nominee. She was involved with many clubs, but president of one club, which she was very involved. She has some volunteer hours and various other things. My mind has gone blank - I've been gone all weekend. I was going to tell you that a boy at her school scored a 2060 on the SAT and was deferred until late May-when he was offered admission. Another boy at her school who is Vietnamese and scored around 2100 was deferred and did not get in at all, so it is not all about the scores. It helps to score high, but they consider everything. My daughter works her butt off, so I know she will do well in college. She is use to putting in 3 or 4 hours a night doing homework. Some people have it made in high school, because they do not have to study hard and still make A's. I would say that would not be the case in college without putting some studying time in.

Thanks for sharing that Alcook4u, it makes me feel better about my chances. I can't seem to get past the SATs (I got a 1240 Math+CR last time) and I took it again yesterday, and I feel like I got the same score. I feel like the SAT is holding me back since I already have a high GPA and a high class rank.

I'm kinda hoping UNC will look at the writing portion as well since I got a 1940 overall, which I think is decent, but without the writing, I don't think thats too good.

cubsfan23 - I can't remember where I read this, but it said to mention in your essay (the optional essay for Carolina) that you wished your SAT scores compared more with your GPA or class rank. I would use two or three sentences to explain. My daughter used two or three sentences to explain how she felt that she was more than what her test scores reflect. I personally think your scores are great. I know a lot of people on here believe it is all about the scores. I do not believe that because of the two people I mentioned in my earlier post. Just keep your grades up and write great essays.
