SAT Subject Tests for Ivy League

Is it necessary to take the SAT subject tests for ivies or is it just recommended?

I have no idea

The “Testing Requirements” page on each admissions web site will tell you. (Hint: I think it’s only a couple of Ivies that use the word “required” at all.) But I think pretty much all Ivies expect SAT subject tests. Even if they say “applicants won’t be penalized if they have no subject tests,” anyone without them wouldn’t have the advantage of those who do. And everyone needs all the advantages they can get for those schools.

Look on the college web sites to see whether they are “recommended” or “required”.

“Recommended” gives them leeway to admit students from limited-opportunity situations where counselors, teachers, and parents may not know that some colleges want subject tests because few to no students from those environments apply to colleges that want subject tests.

But students in high-opportunity situations where subject tests are well known may want to consider that some of those colleges saying “recommended” expect students in high-opportunity situations to take them. Basically, if you heard about subject tests in time to sign up for the late 11th grade test dates, it is best to take them if any of your colleges “recommend” (or “require”) them.

The only reason they are not required is because colleges don’t want to disadvantage low income students who cannot afford to take multiple standardized tests. For ivy leagues, you have to maximize your chances everywhere. I extremely recommend taking subject tests, even if you suck at testing. Better have the AOs see you tried than think you’re blowing them off.
If not taking the tests is a money issue, however, then colleges will understand.

@Arithmetix The subject tests are a great way for you to prove to colleges that you have developed a strong knowledge base in a certain field of study. If you have the time and are willing to put in the effort, I would certainly tell you to go for it.

If you have taken AP exams, I guess that also suffices in demonstrating your academic knowledge. But, if you have already taken an AP, why not do the subject test as well?

SAT Subject Tests are generally “recommended” for almost all of the Ivies. But “recommended” for an Ivy League college has its own connotation.
