I want to apply EA this fall b/c i am OOS and i feel it will show real initiative that i want to go to UNC. I will only have one more chance to raise my scores for the SAT and II's, i wanted to know if the II's are heavily weighted or not.

FYI
M740
CR660
W620

MATH2 680
Physics 670

i am also thinking about taking the ACT since they are on diff days

UNC doesn’t care about the SAT II. The only one that matters is Math II, which is used for placement once you are in, and guess what, if you get in, you will be placed into Calculus (the highest unless you get a 3, 4, or 5 on AP Calc).

That being said, raise your CR a bit. Try for 700+. Still 1400 is impressive. What is your weighted GPA?

You get placed into the same class if you get a 2 on the AP Calc exam too, I believe. Soo if you’re taking AP Calc & planning to take the exam…don’t bother. I second Tony on trying to raise CR to above 700, but either way, your 1400 is good.

Definitely take the SAT again because UNC doesn’t care too much about SAT II’s. Also, I HIGHLY recommend taking the ACT as well. They’re pretty different tests, and I ended up doing the equivalent of about 200 SAT points better on the ACT.

^I honestly wouldn’t recommend that the OP take the ACT. He already has a relatively high composite score for the SAT, which suggests that any score difference would be minimal. The only time that I see taking the ACT as worthwhile is when a 4.0 student scores a 1600/2400 or something along those lines. That suggests the test might be to blame. If a student scores 1400+/1600 I would think that there wasn’t a major issue with the test.

To the OP: That being said, get a CR study book and do a bit each week between now and October and you should be able to raise the CR by 40 points. UNC superscores, so you don’t have to worry about doing poorly on the other sections.

I agree with the general sentiments, but scoring a 3+ will get you into Math 232, which is one course higher than the SAT II can place you into (OP, you are already at the highest SAT II placement).

If it were me, I would not worry about the exam, and take Math 231 as a Calc review/GPA boost like lauriebeth said, but if for some reason you want to go into the highest possible math, take the exam.

Ahh, I meant don’t bother about the SAT II in math…sorry Just getting above a 2 on the calc exam gives you the Math 110 placement you need for about every math class, but above a 3 on the BC gets you 231/232 credit. I took the Calc exam, though I don’t need calc in the slightest for my major, and now I have credit for 231/232…so it can’t hurt. And if you want to review calc, you can always go back and take 231.

If it helps i want to do biochem or microbio for my major, and i intend on going to med school, so i’ll have to take the pre-med requirements. so for the math placements i might want to test out of the lower level to go straight into the higher level to fulfill the requirement(not 100% sure about the specifics on this though so any knowledge about it would be nice).

and I all really want is a CR above 700 so we are on the same page as far as that goes.

lauriebeth, the same thing happened to me with the calc… I took the BC exam and placed out of 231/232 by some freaking miracle! Totally worth it to not have to take a single math class ever again (knock on wood).

And fyi, Biochemistry and Microbiology are not majors at UNC. You can choose the Biochemistry track if you are a Chemistry BS major, but I don’t think there is a Microbiology track (I’ve only ever heard of people taking a Microbiology class). You would just have to be a Biology BS or BA major in that case. I had no clue about that either as a freshman.

If i do go i will probably do the bs with a biochem major then. thanks for that info.

does anyone know about which level math qualifies as the pre-med fulfillment though?

I’m thinking you have to have through 232… anybody know for sure?

Here is the placement info:[Placement Information](http://www.math.unc.edu/for-undergrads/placement-info.html)

Scoring a 3+ on Calc BC would fulfill the math requirement for a Biology BS I believe.

Okay, it’s definitely 232 then.
