I know the SAT scoring machines are pretty meticulous these days but I still can't help but wonder if they messed up on mine. I would've had a great score this time if my writing didn't drop 100 points (780 to 680). I don't understand it at all. My essay was good (prob. 10/12) and I'm sure my mc was all solid except for maybe 1. Has anyone had positive experience with hand grading? Should I give it a try?

They give you the MC and essay breakdown, so check that out. but speaking from personal experience, the writing score is the most liable to extreme changes.

Do your target schools superscore? I wouldn't go to the expense if they're only going to consider your highest score anyway.

my writing score dropped dramatically too...>100 points.
but most of my schools superscore so im not too worried about it.
hopefully theyll just think I had a bad day or something

Yeah, I think writing is most likely to drastically change. Within one month, my reading went up 10, my math went up 10, and my writing went up 110. CRAZY!!!
