Satirical News Shows

Everyone has been raving about The Daily Show and The Colbert Report like it was created by Americans first, however, Canada has had shows like that (This Hour Has 22 Minutes and The Rick Mercer Report) way before us. How come now Americans like these shows?

I'm not Canadian btw, but I watch the CBC more than American television. :)

I would have watched those shoes but I don't get any Canadian channels except OLN.

Because John Stewart has gained a considerable amount of media exposure recently.

Whether it was Death to Smoochy, Crossfire, or the Academy Awards, I will never know.

Steven Colbert only got his own show after both The Daily Show and his role in Jon Stewart's show gained popularity.

I'm not saying that Colbert's success depended on Stewart though. Colbert is a funny man on his own.

I didn't know people were haralding them as the first satirical news shows...but if they are, then I agree with the posts above me.

Who cares whether they were first or not, I still would rather watch the Daily show or the Colbert report rather over any Canadian show.

^ Actually, the best comedians and shows are Canadian.

Corner Gas is a pretty funny show on the Comedy Network in Canada.

I agree, although I'm a bit biased. (I was born in Canada)

"^ Actually, the best comedians and shows are Canadian."

That is purely subjective. I have never watched a Canadian show(well maybe I have but I just don't know). I probably wouldn't think it was as funny, especially a political show since I am not familiar with Canadian politics. Who really cares who's shows are better(even though American TV is much more popular).

No, no, no. The first satirical news show was the news report in on SNL.
America Wins again!

^ It was just a random thought.

Don't tell me you guys have never seen Kids In The Hall?

PS: Like I said before I'm not Canadian lol

I just thought about this while watching Rick Mercer.

This may be because of my South Asian upbringing, which still contains strong British influence, but I've always found British comedies really funny. Some are quite silly-stupid, but others have extremely intelligent humor. Has anyone here seen "Yes Prime Minister"?

I love Brit-coms. "Fawlty Towers" is the funniest show of all-time. I also like "Father Ted."

because canadians totally suck

lol (not true, i know)

probably because nobody knew about them... and just becuase those are *also * satirical news shows doesnt make them good and therefore make americans bad for liking stewart and colbert and not those canadians

Rick Mercer is awesome... :)

He's quite a cutie cowgirlatheart. ;)
