I have noticed a few people on this board have mentioned retaking their SATs. I didn't know this was possible (obviously it is). Is that recommended? I am trying to get into some pretty competitive schools (WashU is my #1), but my SATs are below their average. My best is a 1270, though I never studied or took classes. Should I retake the SATs? Should I study a bunch or take classes? Also, I never took SAT II's in high school. Should I take those in order to improve my transfer chances?

any ideas?

if u click on the thread unsure where to apply, i have some info posted there on it

Don't retake the SAT's, it would be a waste of time considering most schools don't even ask for them for transfer purposes.

Hi -

Just FYI, because I am going through this myself, SAT scores within the past 3 years are required for transfer applicants to Stanford, and scores are also required (I don't know the time frame required) for Harvard, MIT, Notre Dame, maybe Cornell, and maybe Yale. CalTech DOES NOT require SAT scores for transfer applicants, but does require all transfer applicants to take their transfer admissions test, which I have heard is HARD. Oh, at least one of the schools above ALSO requires 3 SAT II Subject Tests, one in each of the three areas. So, with that, I am back to studying for the SAT test, which I'll be taking Saturday.

Hi,

Astro,by any chance do you know the last date I can take the SATs to make the deadline for Harvard and Stanford. I'm at a comm. coll. now and want to transfer for the the fall 2005 term after completing my associates degree. I took the SATs and SAT IIs in highschool and none of my scores were too high.

december is the last date you can take the SAT is you want them considered. I'm applying to transfer to Stanford, and I just talked to them today and they said that SAT's or SATII's are NOT required, but "highly recommended".

Have you ever taken the SAT's or will this be your first attempt?

This is really confusing info. I was at a July 4 party where I was discussing schools I wanted to transfer to with another woman. She is the one who told me about SAT scores required for Stanford. I called Stanford a week later, and the person whom I spoke with in Admissions assured me that SAT scores within the past 3 years were required for ALL transfer applicants. I told them I'd been out of high school for quite some time, had substantial work experience as a computer programmer and DBA, held an Associate's Degree in EET from Purdue, had many college credit hours, and would be transferring in as a junior, and THEY DIDN'T CARE. They said I still needed SAT scores within the past three years, so I took it on Saturday. I even offered to take the GRE instead, since I know I will eventually take that, and they wouldn't bite. They insisted upon SAT scores for all transfer applicants, regardless of all of the above. So, be careful who you talk to there, and maybe call and check again.

Stanford's transfer app. deadline is Feb. 15, I think, so I would think that there would still be time to take SAT's Jan. 22 for consideration for transfer FAll 2005.

That is all I know.

SAT scores are required at some schools for transfer. Im 100% sure they are required for Stanford. I got this information from a rep becuase I once considered applying there. I think that you guys have false information.

Just thought I would pass this info along to whomever might find it helpful.

My daughter is considering transferring to Northwestern, WashU and Emory, and asked about whether or not it would be helpful to retake the SATs to increase her score.

Northwestern said that many students opted to do that and it was fine. Emory does not encourage it. And WashU does not accept SAT scores taken beyond high school according to their latest catalog.

Oops... let me correct that. My daughter is also looking into Tufts and they're the ones who told her that retaking the SATs is not recommended, not Emory.

She's still waiting to hear from Emory.

Dartmouth also requires 3 SAT II's in addition to SAT I or ACT scores for all transfer applicants.
-_-

And I personally recommend retaking the SAT I January 22nd, before they change the test in March 2005. First hand experience has led me to the conclusion that the SAT I is a lot easier now -- with 1 semester of college completed -- than it was my junior year of high school. My score respectivley jumped 300 points, (1220 in october 2003 to 1520 in November 2004) mostly owing to extensive vocabulary ameliorations. I did not take any SAT II's in high school, but I am taking 3 (Math Lv. 1c, Math Lv. 2c, and Literature) on January 22nd.
I am proficient in math, so I expect 750+ scores on both Lv1 and Lv2. However, I am considering taking the SAT II: Writing instead of Literature. I am incredulous as to whether I am capable of scoring much higher than a 700 on either of these tests.
What would you say is the lowest SAT II score worth submitting in a transfer application to an Ivy League school? (I'm applying to Cornell, Harvard, Dartmouth, Columbia, UPENN, NYU and a few exceptional state schools)

mw86d what are your stats, ecs and the school that you are applying from? I am applying to the same schools.
