I got in to Garcia!
Thanks, alumni (esp. livelifeloud) for the help.

Should I go? :)

Should I go? :)

No problem bks85 =]

Yea definitely go. Its not an excellent program for research, and on top of that everyone there is really fun to be around. I know a lot of seniors who loved the program so much they are going back as mentors this year.

Haha, LiveLifeLoud, I hope that’s a typo!
“Its not an excellent program for research”

Do you know how it compares, in terms of research, to other summer programs like Clarks, HSHSP, etc.?

ahahah yea I have no idea why I wrote “not.” its definitely IS an excellent program!

I’m not actually sure. The research done at Garcia is material science base (but I’m sure you knew that already lol) and I am clueless about the rest ahah.

:) Oh, cool!
Did you dorm there and get food there too?

Yep, I dormed. There was a few options for food. The SAC is the closest to the Garcia labs and it has basic cafeteria foods. It could get expensive, but I was able to find so food for a decent price. There is also the Wang Center for Asian food, and the Hospital which everyone says has the best food the the lowest price.

does garcia send rejection letters as well?
if so, does anyone know if they have been mailed out?

I’m not sure actually. From my memory, however, I don’t think they send out rejection letters because my friend didn’t get in last year and I she didn’t mention receiving one. Then again, I can be completely wrong lol. Sorry!

Based on the proportion of Intel and Siemens semifinalists, it’s about the same in quality of research as Clark Scholars (the difference between the two is more about social/lifestyle preferences), and both are much better than HSHSP. Actually, friends of mine who have gone to HSHSP said the quality of research really isn’t very good.

How about the chances for acceptance? Is HSHSP a lot easier to get into?

I don’t know how much easier, but yes, it is easier to get into. Remember that it also costs money - much more than the housing fee for Simons.

hey, i got in! haha i started another thread, didn’t even know this one existed!

i’m excited!!! :)

to wexs: i admit that i’m not the smartest or hard- working person to ever grace my school or cc… in fact, i procrastinate way too much, which in turn leads to me not doing as well in school…

i think the reason i got in was because i’ve literally won my region’s science fair for the past 5 years… and i can write (which is my only redeeming quality, because i’m not THAT good in math/science…).

so as long as your essays were eloquent and written with passion about attending Garcia. i think you’ll get in. i was actually really really surprised when i got accepted because my stats aren’t great. soo admissions aren’t too terribly hard :)

oh wait… wexs, were you talking about HSHSP’s admissions?

sorry if i interpreted your question wrong…:]

Just wondering, what is the acceptance rate for this program? Are there a lot of out-of-town/state students?

Thanks

Thanks proletariat.

@blair: Haha that’s okay. Winning the regional science fair for 5 years in a row is really impressive! I can see why you got in.

I am out-of-state. Proletariat, when you said that it was much better than hshsp, were you mentioning simons, or garcia, or both? Your subsequent post implied you were talking about simons. How does garcia stack up to hshsp and clarks? Thanks for all the great insight.

what is hshsp ?

out of state too, but i hear a lot of long island people are accepted because they are already really familiar with SUNY, not to mention it’s also really close to where they live at, and when the program ends, they are still near Garcia’s research labs… so i guess convenience??

but idk, just things i’ve heard. oh and i also read somewhere that the acceptance rate was 15-20% ish…? not sure… but i think someone said it on another thread… haha =)

How likely is it for an out-of-town person to win a science award from the research they did at Garcia? I think their time is limited because they cannot keep going back and continuing their project like the students from Long Island.

Thanks

did anyone get rejections yet?
