For the USC SCA Crit Studies supplement, (The writing sample should be a review or analysis of some aspect of film, television, or new media; a discussion or application of critical theory; or a published article.) Do I just review... something?
I just don't understand!
Everyone's telling me to write about lighting or editing or something but I feel like that's not what they're asking.
Someone explain?

This is an essay that shows your ability to critically analyze an aspect of the film/new media/whatever. It’s not a review, but an analytic essay of the sort you’d be writing a lot for this major. You can choose a technique, genre, period, director, production aspect, or – even better – a very specific element in one particular work. Try to come up with an original claim (argument) and support it with detailed evidence. You may want to ask one of your teachers for help–but I’m afraid you’ve left yourself very little time to do this.
