"Be advised that if you become a Cal Grant recipient, the university scholarship offer will be significantly reduced, if not eliminated outright for the next academic year. Typically,
one usually gets either university scholarship, or the Cal Grant, but rarely
both."

Just got that e-mail.

What the heck? I am only getting $13,000! Tons of loans here we go...with a 0 EFC...

That doesn’t sound right nick. I know the budget situation is bad this year, but my loans have never been above $5,500 per year with 0 efc. Try to contact them and confirm.

I called and they said that they subtract the amount you get from cal grant from the ucb grant. So if you have 8k in ucb grant now, they take 7k away since you got a cal grant. You still have 1k in ucb grant. I guess if your ucb grant is less than 7k, they eliminate it completely. Anyone wanna confirm?

krish… that is correct, they give you a UCB grant because they anticipate that you will qualify for a Cal Grant & then subtract the amount of the Cal Grant once it comes in… I have had both before because my Cal Grant wasn’t the full amount of the UCB Grant so once they subtracted it, there was still some of my UCB grant left over

with a 0 efc, you should get your tuition covered. On top u get the pell + workstudy + SEOG + loans. That is 13,000 on top of free tuition. At least that is what it was for me.

You are lucky. UCLA only offered me $1800 in “scholarship recognition”. They actually expect me to take out $22k in loans for ONE YEAR. I know that it’s a tough pill to swallow Nick, but it’s very rare for people to get a free ride, even those that can’t contribute anything on their own. $13k is a decent amount. Almost everyone has to take out loans, that’s what it means to get an education in the good ol’ US of A!

Oooouuuh. =/ Sorry about that KC. Yeah I totally understand that, though I know people whose incomes are higher than mine have gotten near-free rides so I suppose I was expecting at least a little more. I WANT to take out loans, trust me, I really do (I know it sounds weird) just so that I don’t have to think about money for the next two years and just focus on my studies, but I have no credit and neither do my parents!

I hear you Nick, it really is anxiety inducing when you think about the current economy and having to come out of college already in the hole. I think that you should consider where the debt will be coming from too. It’s a lot different walking away from Cal or UCLA with $20k worth of debt than walking away from Cal State Long Beach or Fullerton with $15k in debt. If anyone is going to get a job after graduation, it’s going to be UC students, KWIM?
