SCEA and internationals [NOT a chance me thread]

Do you have any statistics about how many internationals apply EA at Stanford and what percent actually get admitted? (Do any get admitted at all?)

Oh, and all other kinds of statistics concerning internationals would be deeply appreciated

bump? (10char)

I’m a Canadian myself so I have some knowledge in internationals admissions.

If you are applying for financial aid, Stanford SCEA might not be the best option because after your chance get reduced (since internationals have less chance of admission), Stanford’s stingy policy of need-aware financial support (toward internationals) would once again reduce your chance. Stanford used to be my top choice, but after I found out about their need-aware financial aid policy toward internationals, I forced myself to fall in love with Yale.

I believe there was an international science olympiad winner who was defered and ultimately rejected. I think that same applicant was admitted to HYPM.

Harvard, Yale, Priceton (I’m sure there are more), however, are need-blind for everyone, including internationals. Gaining admittance to these schools would be harder since you are an international (in fact, about two times harder), but since they are need-blind toward internationals, your chance wouldn’t take another dump. Therefore, applying SCEA at Yale might be a better admission strategy, if you are interested in Yale as well. Also, unlike Stanford, Yale defers A LOT of SCEA applicants so it might be a safer choice than Stanford.

Also, by any chance, are you a Canadian?
Most Ivy League schools, except Brown (I think), are need-blind toward Canadians and Mexicans.

Generally, it is about 2-3 times harder to get into top schools as internationals.

Overall, I heard Stanford accepts around 30 international students who apply for financial aid.

I sincerely wish you the best of luck. Truly. I think schools should start to accept more internationals haha.

Thank you for the useful answer. Actually, I expected to hear something like this so I’m not disappointed.

I’m not Canadian and I desperately need FA. Too bad for me. But… doesn’t the two risks balance each other? I mean, Yale doesn’t take many internationals and Stanford doesn’t give much FA. Oh, and does it apply only to the SCEA? Although I guess I don’t have a decent shot in any of these schools…

Still, I believe it would be harder to get into Stanford than Yale, even though Yale doesn’t accept a lot of itnernationals. The financial aid policies apply both to SCEA and regular. Since you are not a domestic (Mexican, Canadian) applicant and you need FA, my advice to you is to apply to A LOT of schools with great financial aid packages, like the Ivy League schools. Although very difficult, once you get in, these schools will provide the money you need. Also, don’t fall into love with one particular school since for us internatioanls, most top notch schools are crapshoots.
That being said, if you want to go for Stanford, go for Stanford. After all, there are aid-seeking international students who actually get in.

Also, acceptance rate often doesn’t tell the whole story. While the acceptance rate is lower for internationals, maybe we are competing against less qualified applicants.
