I’ve read through a lot of the forums on CC but this is my first post so hello everyone
I’m only a sophomore but I like planning things and I have been thinking in what classes to take senior year.
When I am older I want to be a nurse practitioner which requires you to get a BSN and a masters degree.
Here’s my schedule for next year:
AP Lang
Algebra 2 College Prep
Honors Chem
Government/Economics
Italian 3
Physiology & Anatomy (half year)
Microbiology (half year)
AP Psychology (half year)
Study Hall (half year)
Possible senior schedule:
Math: Precalculus
English:
- Public Speaking (half year) Definitely something I need to improve on. I feel like it would benefit me in nursing school and in my career and it counts as an English credit.
- Mythology (half year) Counts as an English credit as well. I think mythology is fascinating and the Greek/Latin words might help me with biological/medical terms since many of those words derive from those roots.
or AP English Literature
English isn’t my favorite subject and I’m leaning towards taking Speech and Mythology but I’m not entirely sure. For the people who have taken AP Lit, how is the workload and exam?
P.S. By senior year I would have already taken AP Lang.
Science:
Here’s where things get messy.
I want to take 2-3 science classes.
- Medical Research (I definitely want to take this class)
- Intro to Organic Chemistry (This is also a definite yes because Organic Chemistry is known for being a tough class in college and I feel like taking an intro class in high school would be beneficial.)
- AP Biology
For the people who have taken this class:
Do you think it would be too much if I added this too my already heavy schedule?
How is the amount of homework every night?
How was the exam?
Foreign Language: AP Italian 4 or regular Italian 4
I would take a study hall along with these classes to lighten the amount of homework each night.
My math teacher recommended I take statistics which is a half year course.
I thought about switching AP Bio for Stats (along with another elective) I’m not sure which course would be more helpful for success in college and my career.
Sorry if I wrote too much. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
Public speaking take, it looks good. As for the english class I would choose Mythology since you’re planning to take AP English Language, and Language and Literature really usually goes for the same credit.
AP Biology I am taking currently right now, here’s my answers:
a) No if you manage in a superior way and yes if you don’t use your full potential. You need to be prepared of taking MANY science classes at once in college for Nursing, so I highly recommend taking it.
b) Depends on the teacher, my instructor gives little to no work at all. Ask your upperclassmen who took AP Biology on how much homework is assigned.
c) Don’t know, I heard different opinions about it from “oh, it was doable” to “WHY DID I TAKE THIS CLASS?!”, the exam consists of 63 multiple choice questions, 6 math questions (mostly consisting of algebra 1 [solving for a variable] and statistics]). Instead of essays, there are 6 short answer questions and 2 long answer questions for the FRQs.
Everything looks rigorous, good luck.
Junior year looks good so i’ll give you advice on senior year- I think you should consider taking AP Lit over public speaking since it won’t really help your career in nursing and it’s another AP to add but if you do find room in your schedule try squeezing in Mythology. The sciences your interested in seem solid but be prepared that AP Bio can be a killer, expect tests covering 60-90 pgs of textbook. I’ve never heard of a medical research class- sounds interesting, and organic chemistry is probably important somewhere down the line but if you don’t have room to place it don’t stress you’ll have to take plenty of those in college. I would consider switching into Latin or Spanish if your school offers them, these will help a lot more with a medical career unless your planning on nursing in Italy. Also, definitely take a math and it seems your lacking on a social studies, even though you have a clear focus on science it is important to take a SS class maybe consider government. Other than that it seems that you’re ok just make sure you can handle all this work because one study hall won’t make up for the massive tests you’ll have to study for in Bio or your other science classes.
By the time I graduate I will have taken four credits of Social Studies (World His, US His, Sociology, Gov, Econ, and AP Psychology)
I’m not switching out of Italian since I am already two years deep with the subject
Thanks for all the advice though!!
