I am in Algebra 1 and would like to switch to Algebra 1 Honors, I asked my guidance counselor to switch classes in the beginning of the year and she refused to because I missed the requirements by a few points, but I am getting good grades and would like to advance. Should I ask my guidance counselor to switch schedules, how should I approach this matter?
Ask. All they can say is “no”.
It will help if you have your teacher’s support to move up - would s/he be willing to discuss it with your GC? While I am not a fan of parents being pushy, it may help to have them advocate for it too.
If your GC stills says no, ask what you have to do to jump up a track next year. Answers may vary between schools, but it is common for you to either have to pass a placement test or take a summer prepatory class.
Honors classes may move much faster than on-level classes, so make a detailed plan now regarding how you will catch up if you are able to bump up now. If planned out well, it might even help your case.
One thing to be careful about is since honors moves faster you would already be behind and starting off with things you haven’t learned. Can you talk to either your current teacher or the honors teacher to find out if you can switch and get caught up or what they recommend. Just switching classes by itself with no catch up can make things hard.
My school has a summer class that is required in in order to switch levels (but not guaranteed to pass) because simply getting A’s n college prep does not prepare you for honors the next year.
