Schedule for next year?

Here is the schedule I'm thinking about for next year, I will be an incoming freshman: Schedule for Fall 2011
Does will my workload be overwhelmingly difficult? Also, will I be behind by only taking 13 credits?

bump anyone??

also, is there a good chance of me getting this as my first choice schedule during pre-enrollment?

Your schedule looks fine. It’s only going to be your first semester so 13 credits is a wise decision, and I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to take all of your chosen courses. Good luck!

That seems like a fair schedule. I’m tempted to suggest adding a three-credit course/four-credit language, but it’s only your first semester.

Looks good. Just to warn you though, all your classes are pretty easy, so you’re not going to get the experience of taking a “real” cornell course first semester. i took DSOC 1101 and Astro, which were both a joke. I’ve taken a couple anthr classes and they’ve been cake as well. I wouldn’t say Phil 1101 is THAT easy, but it is an intro course after all.

That said, your GPA will be high first semester, but if I was you I’d gain the experience and take a challenging course first semester so you learn and get acclimated.

Mine is looking really similar to yours but I have a language thrown in there too. It’s a bummer that the class is every day, but it’d be good to bust it out at the beginning of college.

Thank you all for your opinions  I’m a DSoc major in CALS, I haven’t been assigned my advisor yet so I don’t know what he/she would have to say about my schedule, although he/she will most likely have me pre-enrolled in DSOC 1101. Also, In regards to me having a light courseload, do most freshman take 5 classes in addition to PE? I am considering adding an extra class as well but I don’t know if that would overwhelm me my first semester.

Unlike in Arts and Sciences, a language isn’t required in CALS to graduate. I took 14 credits (three 3 credit courses, a 4 credit course + PE) my first semester and thought the workload was easier than I expected and in retrospect I wish I had taken some more 4 credit courses.

Since you are a DSOC major, I’d definitely take DSOC 1101, but you might want to consider taking a 4 credit class instead of ASTRO 1101 and/or PHIL 1100. If one of those courses is offered in the Spring, you may want to wait until next semester to take it and enroll in a heftier Fall-only course that interests you instead.

CALS is very flexible with requirements. Simply pursuing an interest could get you quick credits in one of the categories.

If you want to up your credit limit only marginally, take the astro class with lab. it’s a joke

Okay everyone, I’m considering adding one more class, so my potential schedule would be:

Freshman Writing Seminar (3 cr.)

ASTRO 1101 The Nature of the Universe (3 cr.)

DSOC 1101 Introduction to Sociology (3 cr.)

PHIL 1100 Introduction to Philosophy (3 cr.)

HD 1150 Human Development: Infancy and Childhood (3 cr.)

PE 1100 Beginning Swimming (1 cr.)

Total: 16 credits

So is this schedule better? Also, would I be at a disadvantage for not taking the discussion section for HD 1150?

In most cases you must sign up for the discussion section in addition to the lecture if you are taking a course with both. Sections are led by TAs, and provide an opportunity to go into more detail about things you may have completely understood during lecture, go over homework, prepare for tests, etc. So yeah, pretty sure you can’t just choose not to do it unless you’re auditing or sitting in or something.

I think it’s wise to add another class, maybe even two if you want to “shop” around. You can attend all of your classes during the first week and then have a better sense of which you want to take based on your impressions of the syllabus and prof. Sometimes it turns out that the class description that strikes you as great turns out to not be what you expected.
