Scheduling Classes

I'm not sure how to schedule my classes. Should I try to have break time between each class and extend the total school day? Or should I crunch up all the classes and leave a lot of time later on??

I'm sure there have been students who said, I'm gonna live better so I'll sign up for 8:00AM courses. How does that work?? Is it better to wake up early and spend more time or wake up at 12 and go to classes starting at 2pm?

It just depends on your preferences. No one likes getting up early, but it really depends on for what hours of class can you stay awake?

Do u think its best to crunch up the classes or have at least an hour between each course?

I would go for having an hour between classes. Having two classes back-to-back is okay just as long as both of them aren’t difficult. Having three/four classes back-to-back is hellish. Definitely avoid scheduling a lab back-to-back with another class - you might need that buffer time to study before a lab quiz or complete your lab.

Sometimes 8ams are unavoidable. But, in the case you are able to avoid them… avoid them. I don’t know anyone who enjoys/actively seeks out an 8am…

Also, most classes hold midterms during the scheduled class time (except for large courses), so if you’ve scheduled your class back-to-back you’ll miss out on extra relaxation/cramming time.

I did back to backs the past two semesters for 3 hours straight each. It got pretty tough to stay awake in the third hour, but it wasn’t impossible. But none of them were labs or longer than an hour. And they started at 9 am. It’s tough to do though if you aren’t into any of the classes.

I agree you shouldn’t schedule too many classes back to back, but personally I prefer having a couple back to back then having hour breaks. To me, an hour long break is just an awkward amount of time, if you eat in the break that takes less than an hour and you still have time to kill, but if you don’t eat then there isn’t really enough time to go back to your dorm/apartment or go to the library and actually get much of anything done. So I like to schedule my classes in two chunks of back-to-back classes with a longer break in the middle to eat and go home or to the library.

Last semester I had 3 1-1/2 hour classes back to back, that was pretty brutal. I think 3 1 hour classes is manageable, but 1-1/2 is too much. I think around 3 hours of back to back classes is good, 4 is pushing it, and any more than that is too much.

Having some back-to-back classes is definitely better than having awkward breaks here and there. For me, the idealized schedule should be starting my day around at 10 and try to end it before 3~4 with maybe two 1 hour breaks between for lunch and such.

I agree with AdequateRemedy. 3 hour blocks are a good amount, but 2 hours is ideal I’d say. Starting at 10 is probably the best time also. For me personally, I can’t have a class at lunch time or a class past 3 or else I will fall asleep. Plus I work from 4-7, so no class after 4. That limits me to 8 AMs pretty much…yay!
