I'm entering UVA in the fall as an Arts & Sciences student, but over the past couple of months I've decided that I want to pursue a biomedical engineering degree. About a month ago, I emailed a few deans about switching over to the E school and they let me know that while there isn't any space for me to officially switch, I can still try to register for E school classes at orientation and then try to transfer at the end of my first year. I was just wondering whether anyone who has had any experience with this could offer any advice. Thanks in advance :)

Below is a link to the “standard” schedule for First-Year SEAS students. There are many modifications to this. If a student has Chem credit, what year calc they are starting with, etc. Regardless of intended major (which they apply for in April) the requirements are the same for all students (Rodman Scholars have slight variations). The collective wisdom here is if you have Chem credit and feel comfortable moving on you want to move your Comp Sci requirement from second semester to first semester. There are far fewer students taking it in the fall. I could not tell you which of these courses, if any, are blocked to CLAS students at orientation. My guess is initially ENGR 1620/1621 and STS 1500 SEAS may be given priority, just as there are many courses that CLAS are given priority and SEAS students must wait to enroll.

To get a clear idea of what courses you may be initially locked out of during orientation I would call Thornton Hall @ 434-924-3072. They are exceptionally knowledgeable, and most helpful.

Thanks. Unfortunately I don’t have any chem credit, but I’ll call to try and figure out what I can take to set me on the right track. I looked up the schedule, so my worry isn’t not knowing what I need, it’s just being able to actually take the courses I need to take.
