got into CLAS, but interested in transfer to SEAS

I was accepted into CLAS and i am planning on majoring in Cognitive Psychology with a concentration in neuroscience. However, recently I have developed an interest in accompanying my cogsci major w/ an engineering discipline. Particularly: Biomedical Engineering. So my question is what classes would i have to take my first year as a CLAS student to be qualified + competitve for an internal transfer to the bio med program? and also would uva allow someone to double major in 2 different schools: for example a cogsci from CLAS and a biomed from SEAS?

Thank you guys!

also who would i contact if i wanna change schools before orientation? (is this even possible)

Not sure about double MAJOR as that would probably be quite intensive unless many of your classes are in similar fields, however, I know for sure they allow students in CLAS to combine their major with a minor in another school (I plan on doing this w/ architecture if I get in as a transfer).

You can double major in diff schools. S majored in systems engineering and economics. Some of the requirement overlap but still needed to overload an extra class for 3 semeters. Looking back, probably not worth it. Better just concentrate on one major and do well in it.

I don’t think you can change school at orientation. Probably during second semester.

If you think you are headed to Biomed Engineering, ask for a transfer now so you can start SEAS right away since the Engineering curriculum is not that flexible. I would ask to talk with someone in SEAS (like an assistant Dean) before school starts.

The earliest you can transfer into the engineering school is for the spring of your first year. If you want to transfer, take Physics, Chemistry, and Calc your first semester, that way your schedule resembles what an engineering major would have taken and you can demonstrate proficiency in the area. If you wish to transfer before school starts, you have to take it up with admissions, not the engineering school itself.

Also, if you contact Admissions right away, speak to a dean/counselor, I’m sure they can help you in some way switch schools if that is what you intend, or place you on a waiting list or something, just speak ASAP. At this point, you will probably be on a waiting list, as I don’t see how it would be fair to disregard waitlisted students for SEAS simply because another student changed their mind.

thnx for such quick responses. I have emailed the associate dean of admissions.

You also should know biomed is a capped major so you have to have good grades to gain admission.

ok so UVA replied back and asked me to write a formal request. I was just wondering what kinds of things I should include in a formal request for an internal transfer? I know obvi that i should state my reasons of transferring…but should i mention anything relating to my application (i.e: grades in math classes, SAT II scores in math, engineering classes taken in hs, and engineering awards and stuff)

bump anyone?

The attrition rate for SEAS majors is pretty high – about 17% of the first-years will fail to graduate with an engineering degree. When you find that you have to study more than your roommates, and physics and chemistry aren’t quite as easy as you thought, will you bail out to CLAS? So I suggest you write about commitment.

BTW, if you’re thinking about BME and/or cognitive science, grad school is a given. A psych major probably requires at least ten psych classes, so you will have to take 21 hrs a semester. Engineering classes require a lot of group work, so I think your grades would suffer and/or your classmates will hate you for your lack of participation. Stick with one major.

Mech, how manageable is a Cognitive Science and Neuroscience double major? in your opinion.

No idea – that’s not my area of expertise. Just take no more than 18 hours a semester and preferably less. Your undergraduate years go by way too quickly – find time for social and community activities.

I had some time on my hand today so I kinda planned out what classes to take (I will try to focus on the neuroscience + cog sci double major + pre med). I had two questions:

1) what is the differnce between chem 1410 and 1420 (cause the neuroscience major requires both of those to be completed)?

2) how does the following 1 year schedule look:

1st semester: MATH 1310, CS 110, CHEM 1410 + 1411 (i think this is the lab of 1410, right?)

2nd semester: PSYC 1010, PSYC 2200, BIOL 201 +202(again lab of 201 i think?), CHEM 1420+1421

btw sorry for adding on but I am really confused on how to calculate the credit for labs? because under labs theres a lecture + lab portions and sometimes both carry credits and sometimes only the lecture does.

can anyone give me an estimate on the #of credits I am taking each semester? If i am doing this right, i get 15 credits 1st semster and 17 credits 2nd semester…do they about right?
