scholarhip questio

My son was offered the SOE honors academy. All things being equal with the fafsa, six other schools offered him some merit aid (non need based). Rutgers didn’t offer anything but a loan. Does this make sense? Our EFC is just about the cost of the school. It’s such a great opportunity but if just comparing financial stats it may be more expensive then other schools. This is a surprise to us. Anyone having a similar experience or past experience?

Please see this link regarding scholarships at SOE. http://soe.rutgers.edu/oaa/scholarships

It says that scholarships are only awarded to returning students at SOE.

For returning students: “If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call Sue Thorn at 848-445-4752. ALL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY MAY 1, 2015 TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR A SCHOLARSHIP IN THE 2015-2016 ACADEMIC YEAR.”

I never heard of this before. My son applied to SOE a few years ago and was offered a Presidential Scholarship as a freshman. Let us know what you find out.

What were your son’s GPA and SATs? There are a number of people who get into the honors programs without scholarships. As rualum stated above, there are opportunities to receive scholarships after freshman year and SOE is very good about rewarding people who perform well academically.

Thank you. I was informed by phone that this was not his award letter. It will be available April 1st. I am however going to try to get ahold of Sue Thorn for clarification. Thank you again.

My son’s GPA is 4.0 un weighted. He was a student at the governor’s school this past summer. He does not qualify for a presidential scholarship. My surprise was because he had been offered scholarship money at NJIT, Stevens, Rowan, Honors college at UMCP with scholarship money, accepted but still waiting about any financial help at UR there might be something. I guess we need to be patient. I am going to get ahold of Sue Thern to find out more detail. Thank you again.

Oh I’m glad he will still be receiving an award letter, especially with a GPA like that. Always nice to see GSET students as well! My only advice is that Sue Thorn does not work in the admissions office, so she more than likely will not be able to help you with the first years merit scholarship information. That is all handled through admissions and financial aid. She is a great resource after enrolling, though.

Just for reference purposes, my son’s GPA was 4.9 weighted. CR and M 1500. 3 years ago.

Thanks then I’ll wait on all of it. Very grateful for the info. This is my first time around.

I got a presidential to engineering - it definitely exists.

Since we have seen people get Presidential for SOE it’s weird that the web page says that they do not award scholarships to freshmen. I think it is poorly worded.

I think the confusion is that the SOE itself doesn’t award first year scholarships. First year scholarships are handled through the admissions and financial department for students entering any of the undergraduate schools. Then the individual schools offer additional scholarships to continuing students.
