Has anyone received any mailings about the specifics on Scholars Day or any info on sign-up for orientation dates yet?

not yet for us

I would suggest that you see if you can find the dates on the website and make hotel reservations if possible. I remember last year it seemed a little late coming out. Probably for in-staters not a big deal but when you are traveling from OOS it's nice to have more lead time.
I am pretty sure it was in late March but I might be wrong.

I just looked at old posts and it was March 25 last year and I had not received my info as of March 5. I remember getting anxious about making airline reservations, etc.
Good luck!

Thanks for the good info. I imagine they will be sending something very soon.

It's definitely on March 24th. Ed Black emailed us and said it was early in the morning until mid afternoon on that day.

We appreciate the info; we haven't received anything about this, either. Still unsure if DS will attend, although he would really like to. We might wait to come for Orientation (can they sign up for classes at that time?) Baseball practice starts next week and S will be involved with that almost every day--even weekends.

Orientation is when they take placement tests for math and foreign language and sign up for classes. Try to have your son look through the catalog beforehand to have an idea of which classes he wants. Depending on their major they may be in with a pretty large group and the more info they have ahead of time the better. (There's a group of students at computers with a number of advisors helping). I know my daughter had to navigate her way through as there were a large number of students in her group.
Also, if you can I would suggest you choose one of the earlier orientation dates as more classes will be open and it will be easier to get the schedule you want. Our school did not get out until June and then she went to senior week before we went to orientation. She ended up with a decent schedule, but could have had more options earlier as some classes she wanted were closed. I actually thought it was a good lesson for her to have to be flexible and figure out class locations and timing, etc.

I thought I remember hearing from Ed Black when we visited that the HC kids got first dibs on classes. Now I am not so sure.

We can't go until at least June 20th because school isn't out until then. Maybe we will go during exams, since S probably will be exempt from them, but that only saves a few days.

You can definitely wait for Orientation.Scholars Day is what the call the "dog and pony"show,to convince the students to come.
Orientation is where they register and do placement testing.Much more important!!i would just suggest as PAMom says to try to make it as early in the process as possible even if it means missing a day or two of HS.

My daughter is not in Honors , she's in Capstone and they do not get scheduling priority. cathymee can probably help you with that one though. Sorry if I confused the issue.
I remember last year that eadads daughter ( my d's roomie and a fellow capstone scholar) had a great advisor who helped a lot with her schedule. I think a lot of it depends on your department and maybe even your particular advisor. I know that this fall my daughter met with her advisor to plan her spring schedule and she was very pleased with his knowledge and help.

Yes that's what we liked about USC. For such a big school, they really seem to give a lot of personal attention to the kids

I am trying to minimize trips from Idaho to Columbia, as it is pricey. I was hoping that we could make just two trips, one to visit for the first time and then if my D decides to attend USC to go for orientation just before school starts. It sounds as if people think that this will put her at a disadvantage in getting her desired classes. Is that right? Thanks.

I did not even realize that you could do orientation right before move-in until we had already gone. LOL I probably would have chosen that option as well just to save another trip, but I would be a little concerned about classes being filled. Maybe you can call her department and ask them that question? It may be possible for her advisor to do a schedule for her over the phone
during the May/June orientations. They might be able to tentatively place her in a math class or language class and then change it if her testing puts her at a different level? It's worth a call I'd say.
We visited in August the first time, in February because my daughter wanted another look to help her decide, and then she wanted to go to scholar's day
(which we did not know about before the Feb trip). Throw in the June orientation and I was a regular at the local breakfast spot. LOL Made friends with one of the chefs who was from Philadelphia .LOL
By move-in day I have to say I'd had my fill and just couldn't force myself to go back 3 weeks later for parent's weekend. It worked out because my d was homesick and opted to come home to see her dog instead. LOL
It can be a lot of traveling.

Unless it's changed since the last time I asked my child, honors college students sign up directly with the honors college for classes listed as honors sections; spots are then held that allow them to register for those classes during online registration. There is no priority registration for regular classes for honors college students. I think the registrar sets actual registration times based on number of hours earned.

I think it's absolutely a good idea to schedule your orientation date earlier, as opposed to later.

dggt
You're taking a big chance if you wait till move in to do the registration/placement .S's roommate in the Honors College did it as his plans were uncertain (Hes Mormon and wasnt sure when he was doing his Mission) and even with Honors priority he took a big hit in scheduling.
But you have to do whats best for you, travel wise. How about calling Admissions for some advice?

dggt....by the way,you may win a prize making that trip from Idaho to Columbia...what kind of connections do you need to make?
If it makes it any easier,Charlotte NC airport is about 90 miles away and has many more direct flights..might that help you out?
H and S did that flight once he said the drive is easy, straight highway miles.

Got an email today about Scholars Day. Says it will be Mar. 24. Email says letter coming in mail also. RSVP required if you plan to attend.
