Scholars Preview Program

I don’t think many parents are going. Lots of the kids invited seem to be OOS and it’s hard to arrange for a trip on such short notice, especially if you’ve got your typical job hours to attend to.

I’m starting to get nervous, haha. Has anyone faxed in their Overnight Agreement Form?

Very common going alone. In fact I don’t remember anyone saying their parents were around.

Hey all,
I went to scholars last year and I am a host this year (Black female). It is intended for minorities, so that could be multicultural students or students from low-income or rare, low populated places (Nebraska, Idaho), which is why some white students are invited. It is SOOO much fun. Seriously, I cannot stress how much fun it is. Friends I meet during preview to this day still talk about it, and we all can’t wait until next week. I HIGHLY urge any and everyone who is invited to attend. Now to answer the rest of some questions I read.

Since it’s an extended stay, not many parents came. There is however, numerous hotels downtown and even the Inn at Penn if you really want to include your parents in this experience. The basic setup of scholar’s are tours and panels in the morning/afternoon and social events in the evening. I’m from Philly, so my mom just came for opening ceremonies and the Penn Preview day that is included in the preview. Honestly, I skipped most of those things anyway and just kind of roamed around campus with friends.

Tip: I don’t know how public they make this, but if you live far enough, not even that, if you plan on flying to Penn for scholars, even from NY, PENN WILL PAY FOR IT. I’m not sure if it’s the same this year, but in previous years this will deal. Just call Penn and tell them your situation.

I think that’s all I saw, but if anyone has any other questions I’ll be lurking around lol. Hope this helped!

and check out my thread if you have any other questions, some of them may have already been answered.

I received an invitation to Scholars and Penn Preview also, but I’m just going to do a Penn Preview day because I also have to visit other schools.

For everyone’s information…Penn does not fly everyone over.

I don’t have a working fax machine…can I just scan and email or something by tomorrow? I definitely want to come

My D. is going alone. Call the contact person listed on the brochure but I don’t see any reason a scanned, e-mail copy wouldn’t work since you have to bring the original with you anyway.

I’m probably going to have to submit a scan, too, because our fax machine just broke and we don’t know of anyone else who owns one.

Hi. I’m a Penn Freshman and i’ll be hosting someone for scholars preview. I did it last year and it was CRAZY FUN!!! You guys are going to have a great time. If they run it like they did last year, you’re going to see performances by various performing arts groups on-campus as well go to a party at the penn museum which is huge. There’ll be other random academic stuff to go to as well, but you’ll have fun. And if you decide to go to Penn, a million dollars was spent just to rent out the philadelphia museum of art (in which they had fireworks) during NSO. lol Get hyped!

New poster Mom. My Hispanic S has been accepted to Penn and will be at the scholars preview next week. Two other east coast schools offered to fly him out to preview…Penn didn’t offer but it never hurts to ask. Does he need to bring a sleeping bag to this? Trying to help keep the packing down. Thanks! He is so excited about Penn.

In the email I got, I was offered a flight. If it didn’t mention that in your email it might mean that they think you’re too close to qualify, but it never hurts to ask. In the PDF I got (I still haven’t gotten my admissions packet and probably won’t get it for a while) it says there are buses available for NYC/Metro area students, and Washington/Baltimore area students. If you live further than that, just call admissions and ask if they’ll fly you in.

Same question…do I need to bring a sleeping bag? Anything in particular I should bring?

kayb92 - interesting, never got an email. Did get the package in the mail. Yes I agree, call and ask for flight (I did). But they only have so much funding I think.

I think I got the email because I’m international and our post system isn’t very reliable sometimes.

Someone please answer if we need sleeping bags, as well as anything else.

Yes, you should bring a sleeping bag. It is highly likely that you will be sleeping on the floor.

I live in Atlanta (good distance away) and would be attending Penn on heavy financial aid. Was not offered any sort of travel reimbursement. Email inquiry was ignored. Even called and asked and was told that this was not done for admitted students.

Quite furious about this…

For those of you who are being flown out, are you from a very distant location?

I do live very, very far away. I’m also attending on heavy financial aid.

kayb92 - That certainly makes sense.

488140 - I never got through via email so ended up emailing someone else. Other colleges would only pay for travel over a certain distance, so that might be true of Penn.

So, is your son going to be able to attend?

I’m currently asking around for a sleeping bag because I had no idea I’d need one - oops!
