I have been looking at applying to UK in the fall. I am an out of state student from Alaska. I am looking at their nursing program. The only way I'll be able to go here is if I can get a merit scholarship. It looks like I will be able to apply for competitive scholarships. I have a 4.0 GPA and 1390 (M+CR). What are my chances of getting either:

Otis A. Singletary Scholarship
Presidential Scholarship

Does anyone know how many of these scholarships they give out and if I even have a chance at either. Thanks for any help!!

The Singletary Scholarship is hard to get. Many of the recipients are from in State. That being said, however, all schools want to attract quality students from all 50 states. If you are from a neighboring state, applicants are a dime a dozen. Being from Alaska would be a plus, in that they do not receive as many applicants from that far away. I believe that part of what they are looking for with the competitive scholarships is involvement with extra curricular activities, as well as a person who is outgoing and would be a good representative for UK.

With such a great SAT score, I wonder if you took the PSAT. Many out of state students are initially attracted to UK due to the Patterson Scholarship. It is a guaranteed scholarship for NMFs this year, and very similar to the Singletary. Some of the people that have been active on this board this year were Patterson eligible. Some of our kids have chosen UK, others have not. If you are not Patterson eligible, I would think that with your stats you would get an interview for the competitive scholarships.

D’s boyfriend does not have nearly your stats, but received the $10K per year, which will bring his cost down to what it would cost for him to go to college in Illinois. Many students who were Patterson eligible were not even interviewed for the competitive, though the difference is very minimal between Patterson and Singletary. We have found the people at UK to be very responsive to all of our questions. We are anxiously awaiting our housing assignment for next year, which should be coming next week.

My advice to you is to contact your UK recruiter and let them know that you are considering UK. There is also a recruiter who works with high ability students that you should keep in contact with. If you start a see blue VIP page, that information gets automatically put on there, as well as information about anything you say interests you. We have found our experience with UK to be very pleasant so far.

@NaperMom Thank you so much for your long reply. It definitely helps. I’m starting to think that the singletary scholarship might be a reach to get but I also see that there is the presidential scholarship that I believe covers the cost of tuition. What do you know about that? Would that be something I could likely receive? Also, is there an interview for the presidential scholarship?

I did take the PSAT, but I didn’t do nearly as well on it as I did on the SAT, so I don’t know that I would be eligible for the Patterson scholarship, which I haven’t even heard much about. Also, I am not a NMF.

I will also definitely consider what you said in your last paragraph and will need to look into that! Right now I have just been trying to find schools that I will potentially apply to with good merit scholarships and a good nursing program. UK seems to be a pretty good match, so I’m looking into it a lot more to see if it’s somewhere I could really see myself going.

Thanks again!

I do not really know anything about the Presidential, but that would be what you might be able to get. Students in IL with similar stats did not get interviews, but here many students apply. Being from Alaska is what might get them interested. Another option is Alabama. Last year, a 1400 got a great guaranteed scholarship. I do not know about their nursing program, but do remember hearing about it on the bus tour when we had toured.

@NaperMom Hopefully I could be considered for the presidential, especially if they want someone from Alaska. Other people on here have been mentioning Alabama as well. I already took the SAT a second time and went from 1220 to 1390 (CR+M) so I wasn’t planning on taking it again unless I really have to but we’ll see I guess.
