Scholarship Information

it does in fact work - I am Presidential!!!

Does anyone know (or know how to find out) how many people are nominated and how many scholarships are actually available?

2008 class:

Trustees 128
Presidentials 332
Deans 117
NM 244 (I do not know whether the NMFs are included in the Pres number above, but I don't think so)

http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/0910/FreshmanProfile2008v3.pdf

If I remember correctly there were 150 places in each of 2 Explore sessions for Trustee. (Don't know how many in each of 3 Pres Explore sessions, but might be the same)

I believe they offered the scholarships to between 50% and 75% of interviewees, so between 150 and 225 were offered the Trustee. Remember that a proportion of students who got it, do not matriculate and go elsewhere.
Trustee candidates can get the Pres instead, and sometimes a Pres can be bumped up to Trustee. Pres candidates can end up getting the Deans.

OMG It works!! I am presidential, too!

For a student who is expected to be a national merit finalist, what is his incentive for him to go to the presidential scholarship interview since they are both 1/2 tuition scholarship?

NEJsMom, ..The student could be bumped up to Trustee depending on his/her interview. He/she will also be invited into the TO Honors program, (though an NMF will probably have a high enough SAT score to apply anyway).
Also, there is less paperwork to deal with I believe regarding the NMF.

Trustee! WooT!

Thanks, Sequoia! Your answer is very helpful.

Also, Trustee/Presidential Explore is a lot of FUN. They make it very clear that they want you to choose USC - which is kind of nice after all the anxiety of applications!

Will they fly you out for an interview if you live far away?

yea i'm wondering the same thing since i'm on the east coast?

They will contribute towards your airfare if you go through their travel agency. You will be provided with this info either in your scholarship invitation letter or online in the Explore info. You will stay in a dorm with a student host, and all meals are included.

Is there any other way to figure out your uscid yet if you haven't recieved the admission letter? This could help a lot of people who are hoping for early admission to see what stage their app is actually at. Thanks and Congrats everyone!

If you have any correspondence from USC the USCid will be on it. If not if you go to your status page and find the section that shows you your profile information (update profile or something) you can find it there under USCid.

Unfortunately I don't think this applies to people who haven't received and acceptance. It's not a list or anything, it's part of your status system. I'm pretty sure the people who got the scholarships but didn't get their letter were people that were accepted but haven't received their letter for some reason (these are usually people with the right status updates).

Looking at the stats of the people who got in and the scholarships they were candidates for I can safely assume that the first batch of candidates were people that were sure candidates for the different scholarships. For example there are some here that are clearly trustee or safely a presidential (like me). I think the ones to come are the ones that might on the borderline (between Presidential and Trustee or no scholarship and Presidential). These might require more deliberation, that is why USC isn't ready for them yet.

Everyone who found out their scholarship already... Did you find out (Trustee vs. Presidential) when you clicked "Reserve" by "Explore USC"? I have been admitted to USC and on the "Reserve" page it address me as a presidential scholarship candidate... but I don't want to jump the gun and assume that I am one without getting information in the mail. Has anyone received their scholarship letter yet?

Last year the Reserve thing was the same as what you got in the mail. I think it's safe to assume that is the scholarship that you got.

On the bright side I'm presidential... but I just did my FAFSA 4Caster and got an EFC I know for a fact I could never afford. Doesn't look too good.

For Explore USC, I probably won't be bringing my parents, is this very "out of the norm"? Will I feel...very much alone? I think bringing even one parent is like wasting money and I'm also very independent.

Anyone have any idea what the pool size for scholarships was? I mean obviously I was not selected out of 35000 students since many probably don't apply before the scholarship deadline...

Am I right to assume there's a shuttle from LAX to USC?

I apologize if these have been covered many times :)

gd1711, I haven't gotten my letter and found out I was trustee by clicking 'reserve' too

I know I just posted this in some other thread, but I was accepted (through the mail) but my Explore USC says nothing about any scholarships. =( Does this mean I am not considered for any?

freesia:
1. There will be plenty of students who will not have a parent there. You will be meeting a lot of other students, no need to be concerned about being alone. You will also be hosted by a present student and there will be lots of activities.
2. see post # 183 in this thread for # of invitees (no idea about pool size)
3. Yes, there's a shuttle from LAX to USC.

How do you find out about the scholarships? We got the admission letter but when I tried to login, I don't see any scholarship information. It only shows the name and then different options to reserve.
