Senior scholarship night is tonight at my school. My ALO is going to present me with my appointment (I still haven’t seen the Air Force version of the leather appointment) and will talk a little bit about the Academy and the admissions process and the monetary value associated with an Academy education. My ALO didn’t say anything about this until today, but apparently I’m supposed to go up there and say something. What did you 4 digs say last year when you were presented with your appointment? I know it’s a big deal to go to the Air Force Academy, but at the same time, I feel like I don’t deserve to boast because everything we’ve done in high school has just been to get us this far. We haven’t proven ourselves worthy yet in a sense because we aren’t even cadets. We aren’t even basic cadets. Anyways, I’m proud of my appointment, but I’m not sure what to say tonight. Any suggestions?

How about something like this, "Of the thousands of applicants, I am the only sassy redhead who got it." And then you can go on about serving your country and so on and so on. :P

hahaha. You're funny. :) No, seriously, do any other appointees have this kind of thing at a scholarship night?

Yeah, we're having an awards assembly in about two weeks from now. I'm pretty sure everyone is exhausted about hearing me go to USAFA, so I really don't know what I'm going to say either.

i didn't have to say anything. i don't know what you would say. probably just the cliche thanks to everyone who helped you earn it

lmao, you have to say a few words? wow, that cracks me up. Didn't do that at mine. There were 3 of us going to the academies at our award ceremony (one to WP, one to annapolis, and me to USAFA). What they did was have everyone else go up there and they did all their announcements. (probably about 4-500 went across with scholarships from $250 to about $20,000 or so). The WP LO was rep for all info in general. She announced the cost of Navy, about 275,000 (audience shock and awe), then WP, about 350,000 (more shock and awe), then AF at 375,000 (lots of shock and awe). So, we each had our ALO give our appointments to us with standing ovations (awkward!).

I had another ceremony at another campus where I go to school. It's called miller career center. I worked an internship as well as AP eng lit through it. But the majority of people get associates degrees or certifications like cosmetology, auto work, GED, etc. So, people in there ranged about the same as at my campus. I was the only academy kid at the campus so they call my name. I stand up. They say, scholarship to USAFA: 375,000 dollars. Every head turned and stared in disbelief at me. I just kinda smiled and stood there lol. Then they moved on and I sat down. Till the end people kept turning and staring over at me lol.

It's a great experience. For me, it was finally the pay-off to all the hard work I put in. Rightfully earned if you made it into an academy.

Enjoy your lime light redhead. Should contrast sharply with the redness. ;)

i got lots of stares and comments the rest of the night, but it was kinda funny.

and don't worry redhead. knowing u, u shouldn't ahve any problem finding a couple words to say. just don't keep them there for hours ;)

gasp Ouch!

hahaha. :) Apparently it's a big deal when someone from a small town in the boonies goes to a service academy. The last person from my high school to attend one was my freshman year. I guess I'll just say... um... thanks to everyone who doesn't evade their taxes? :)

that would work. :) i've told my friends that a lot. its fun

we have that tonight, too. another classmate of mine is going to WP, and a retired Gen who is head of the local WP parents forum is presenting our letters to us, but as far as i know, we don't have to say anything. although knowing him he'd probably think it was hilarious to spring that on us at the last second.

redhead i understand the small town business! the attention has gotten kind of embarassing, don't get me wrong i'm very proud of my appointment and it means a lot to me but i'm the first girl from my high school to go to an academy and they keep trying to make it this big deal. good luck with the 'few words' at your scholarship night...
