but they want to boost their stats for their overall school. it would make sense to hand out a lot more full tuitions, knowing that many high stat kids may not accept. they would be casting a wide net, catching some.

Pitt has always been a stat-driven school. The higher your SAT/ACT scores the better your chances. As each year goes by, more students with “high” stats apply so the competition is tougher for probably the same number of scholarships.

Your 35 ACT would have probably “helped” the unweighted gpa. I don’t believe not visiting will hurt you if you have what Pitt wants. Not every student can afford a trip to Pitt especially if they are from Hawaii or Alaska. And yes, I believe if you have two students with similar stats and one is from Alaska and the other from Ohio – the one from Alaska will get the full scholarship offer.

Yes, but doesn’t seem odd that a 35/3.6 would get one over a 33/3.9? You’d think that the GPA is more important…

There are ALWAYS ways to demonstrate interest. I have business cards from every single school I’m applying to, and I’ve kept in contact with all adcoms when possible.

Acceptances so far? Seven for seven. And at least 70-80% on the scholarship offers.

I’ll just put it down to being NMSF, I guess. Though obviously, other NMSFs did not get full tuition. I feel so lucky, but I feel like I got the scholarship unfairly!

Consider in 2010: there was only 588 students who scored a 36 ACT, 3,914 who scored 35, 8,582 who scored a 34 and 13,393 who scored a 33. This is nationwide numbers.

Also, what kind of classes did you take compared to other students? Might it account for the lower GPA, maybe your classes were tougher. Lots of factors to consider and we don’t see the entire application of the students.

S applied on 11/11, got admission in UHC BioEngg on 11/21 and accepted to GAP in Masters in Engg on 11/25, but no word on scholarship yet…He has 3.7 UW/35 ACT/1530 SAT. Should we expect something?

He has sent a counselor recommendation but I don’t think he sent any teacher’s recommendation…should he send one for scholarship consideration?

Waiiiiiiit, is the GAP a guaranteed graduate program thing?

I’m also going to agree with what many people here said: Travel isn’t really an option for a lot of people (I have friends from California/Oregon/Alaska with full tuition that never visited Pitt before they enrolled), so I don’t think that’s a fair qualifier.

I think another thing is if anyone else from your school has applied in prior years. My year I only got half tuition + SSOE $, but I did a LOT of stuff in the UHC and elsewhere…the two kids who came in the two years after me both got Chancellors…(I mean, they’re also REALLY good students too, obviously, I just think it helped that I put our school on the map for Pitt)

Awesome: The application numbers have definitely increased every year – think 20 applied in 2010/ 2011 and I will be interested to see how many applied this year. Did anyone get Chancellor’s from last year? Safe to say, younger child will be applying next year and we will see how it goes :)

I think Pitt knows it is a safety school for top applicants and seeks to draw them in with money–and it works. My daughter never set foot on Pitt’s campus until after she was accepted and offered full tuition.

I was telling hubby we shouldn’t visit the schools until we get the acceptances since we have already visited the schools with older child already. However, hubby does not want to deny younger child the pleasure of the school visits so we will be hitting the road next summer. Younger child will be applying to many of the same schools older son applied to so we have set foot on all those campuses already. Waiting to see if the child will add “new” schools to the list :)

I looked at the Concordance tables - compares ACT scores to SAT scores.
My son got a 33 ACT Composite (converts to SAT CR+M of 1460) and a 33 ACT English/Writing (converts to 740 SAT W) - total 2200.

One boy from class of 2009, one girl from class of 2010, I don’t know if anyone from the class of 2011 even enrolled here, I know a boy who had full tuition, but he ended up going to Virginia Tech (whyyyyyy?!)
