Scholarship Notification

Hello… My first time here. My son received a letter today from Pitt saying he’s got full tuition. We are OOS. Applied 11/22, accepted 12/7, and $ ltr today. Amazed how quickly they processed the application.

Excellent! That’s as fast as anything we’ve seen here - very good news for other hopefuls!

Wow, FromMD, tell your son congrats. I just got my letter today (applied 11/7, accepted 11/11) - $10,000 for this Oklahoma girl which just makes Pitt seem more and more likely for next year (waiting for other decisions in March though). Would love to be able to say full tuition, but I’m more than happy with what I got. Hope everyone else gets as lucky! :)

livenotonevil - I’m going to send you a private message.

My OOS daughter was accepted to the UHC in October but has gotten no news about scholarships. She is in the top 1 percent of her class (10/740) with 8 APs, I think a 32 superscored ACT and great ECs. She is also Asian, which appears to be an underrepresented minority at Pitt. Since filing her application she has extensively rewritten her essay. Do you think it makes any sense to resubmit it for consideration by the scholarship committee?

FromMD – Congratulations to your son! New to this thread…Would you mind sharing your son’s stats. Appreciated.

Congrats FromMD!!! Pitt must want your student to enroll :)

@murrow
Her ACT seems a little on the low end. Maybe that could be it?

Sure.

ACT: 35 Comp (36/36/36/33(reading)/essay only 8/12
SAT: none
PSAT: national merit semifinalist
GPA: 3.77 UW, 4.49 W
Essay: OK but not great (not to me anyway)
Rec: no clue but I assume they were OK at least
AP: 8 including senior year courses. Mostly 4s’
Lots of community service hours (450) which he enjoys but no school clubs (he’s not into it)
school: magnet high school in MD

Invited to Chancellor’s scholarship but we both doubt it. Hope this helps.

School wouldn’t be Montgomery Blair would it?

@AwesomeOpossum

No, not Blair. One of the other magnets in the county. Good guess though.

Was accepted in early November and haven’t heard anything back regarding scholarship money. I guess a 1520 SAT doesn’t cut it. =(

Also depends on GPA, major applying to, hooks, and the state you’re from. Sucks, I know. :/

2100 SAT (1380 CR+M…), straight A’s, 2nd in class, first generation college student, accepted to Swanson, but no scholarship or honors college notification yet. :/

Edit: Oh, I’m in-state, so I guess that’s not helping either.

I was accepted in early November, but haven’t heard back regarding scholarship money yet… 1550 SAT, 3.9 GPA, several AP courses, high school swimming, plus I’m from a non-English speaking country (moved here only 4 years ago), good rec letters…is that not good enough?

oh, and I’m in-state

Even though you’re an in-state student, you are also international (unless you’re actually a Citizen…?) it may be a weird thing, but I’ve heard of schools not offering aid to international students (because they’d rather give aid to students actually from here). Not sure if that might be happening in your case. When you applied also matters. It’s much harder to get $ for an in-state student, so many in-state students apply VERY early on before all the money is gone.

My son was fortunate to get a full scholarship in Nov. He is in-state, but has good stats: NMSF, good GPA, SATs and SAT IIs. We are really grateful for the scholarship.

However, Pitt is not his first choice, and he really doesn’t want to go there! We are trying to get him to reconsider, but if he gets into one of his first choice schools and gets some decent financial coverage, he will probably decline the scholarship. We are hoping he might go out during the honors weekend for accepted students and maybe he would feel more open to Pitt after that.

i applied 10/10, admission letter dated 10/14
got into honors, engineering
33 act superscore, 3.77uw gpa, 4.72w, top 10% of class
national honor society, internship at plant bio lab
2 rec letters from teachers, 1 from college prof, & 1 from guidance counselor - probably all good, but didn’t read
spent a lot of time on essay, but didn’t get an email saying they liked it
oh, and I’m oos

I’ve seen kids with a 33 ACT not get a scholarship, unfortunately, especially kids from neighboring states like Ohio. But you should call to make sure! Mistakes do happen.
